A harp!

Just my assumption!

Really hope they wont use it
It would be just awful!

I've had another look at the 'sting' and I think it's actually a ship.. looking up at the sails from the mizen mast on deck. This is the easiest way I can represent it is showing 4 photos.

For them to go to this level of effort means this could very well be the real thing, minus the logo. A boat ties well with RTE's insatiable appetite for maritime imagery and the fact that it's digitally rendered means the work put into it would conform to something new. Also the wording of the sentence before the RTE News graphic:

"And yet another dimension to RTE News and Current Affairs"

I think that we're looking at the real thing, as I said minus the logo. We can only wait and see. I think the logo will be different because it's not propery stuck-on to the black flag behind it.

Needless to say, apart from the pixelations, it looks completely crap. Pity - The thought of using brown and black on the big news wall renders it useless. If this is the way they go, I don't think I'll be watching too much longer and Sky News Ireland will have to do.

Diarmy, shouldn't we watch the news because it is fair, and not because it looks pretty? If the former is the case, I would be watching Fox News Channel, but in reality, I would rather watch Una O'Hagan doing the news than Fox News Channel!

Let us separate quality of news from the quality of the news's graphics .

in fairness C2tv, news is half entertainment half topical... taking your analysis on board would lead us to simply abandon the news entirely on tv and just listen to the radio.

it's quite difficult to watch news unless it's presented well and properly. Fox News is a prime example of a channel no one can watch because it's presentation is soooo unbelieveable crass (and when coupled with the racist and pro-republican views it's completely unwatchable)

We Irish are naturally perfectionists and love to find something wrong and pick out the bad points... it's not a bad thing in the slightest because we accept nothing but the best.

So for my part, I think it is crucial that the presentation part of RTE's news is top-notch (largely due to the incompetent background staff and poor presenters and boring news stories.)

It's about coming home from work at 6 and winding down with something that's relaxing but informative. Right now, RTE are semi-informative (and in the past were very informative) but the presentation is boring and glitchy - so yes, I think the graphics, presentation package, title music and updates are important.

I agree with you diarmy for the most part. Presentation is very important. Thats (obviously) the aspect of RTÉ News which needs the most work. On the other hand, the content itself is very good and there isn't much wrong with it. But I don't think people will switch off RTÉ News just because the presentation isn't that good. Where else are people supposed to get a good round-up of Irish news? I know Sky News Ireland is on the go but thats only available to around 30-40% of the audience so it can't really be counted overall. TV3 is not good for proper news. Everyone knows that and TG4 is OK but unless you're a gaelgóir, you won't be watching for too long. I myself am very loyal to RTÉ News and so are a lot of people especially older generations. The bad presentation doesn't make me switch off because (even though I can get SNI) in my opinion, there's nowhere better to get Irish news. But i could be wrong...maybe people are switching off because of the usual carry-on - I don't know.

Regarding the mysterious graphic - I don't know what to make of it but I don't think RTÉ would come up with this if they are trying that hard (and I presume they are trying hard because this is a critical relaunch). We already know a large investment is being made in the studio ie: the LED and, bad as they can be, I can't see them all being happy with this brown 'thing'.

The reporter in Lebanon has a new microphone logo - it's green background with the RTE News in white (similar to what's on that autumn promo). It's new - a hint of the relaunch?

EDIT: Just saw that this was mentioned a couple of pages back... Embarassed

TG4 isn't that great with news. Sure, it is made by RTE, but I still watch RTE Nuacht online and when I'm there. I can't really make heads or tails of the graphic. It reminds me of TV3's old idents with the 3d 3.

I didn't literally mean people would turn off from RTE, but rather that figuratively, it would lead to more and more people being more and more fed-up with the dodgy presentation. I've only had NTL digital for 2 years and it only took 2 weeks to fall in love with BBC News 24. I still watch RTE News for the sake of the Irish aspect, but what I'm really saying is that if RTE had a competitor of equal-ish footing, they'd be wiped off the board for presentation and execution reasons. If Sky News Ireland lasts until DTT becomes a national reality and TV3 news becomes serious about news (they STILL haven't gotten around to having a news website) then RTE could be in serious trouble. As I've said in the past, they have huge potential but unless they cop on and do things right for once (given that we're being hunted like dogs to pay TV Licenses to which we have no say on its use or accountability for it) we shouldn't be treated like amateur idiots by our national broadcaster with the adage "sure nobody'll notice, it'll be fine."

On another point, any one notice the change in the Lebanese/Israeli correspondance lately?? The two correspondants have taken the microphones out of the shot!!! Shocked Wonder did Teilifís's rant hit home, and if so, what powers from RTÉ are reading our constructive criticism??

interesting........ Cool

I doubt it somehow, but certainly noticed alright Wink
And what a difference it makes! Crowley acted pretty much the same, but Tony Connolly is so much more natural, and with paper in his hand. Makes the world of difference - the setup with both doesn't seem remotely as contrived as it is with mics. More of this please!
And again top marks re the temp studio - the presenter mid shot is absolutely spot on in every respect in replicating Studio 3. They've really fine tuned things and it looks exactly the same now Very Happy. Excellent lighting too - even the wide shot has improved

Yes I agree that if RTÉ had a competitor equal to it in content, it would certainly brush up its presentation, no question. It has a near monopoly on Irish affairs - no bad thing - but this has always affected presentation over the years, never being forced to clean up its act. Indeed, as difficult as it is to believe, about 15-20% of the Irish population still only have the four Irish channels! So RTÉ are all they know, and of course this figure was much greater until fairly recently.

Overall though, in reporting presentation, things seem to have been better 10 years ago than what they are now the more you look at older reports. Lovely steady, solid stuff - nicely done by professional editors. None of the muck we get today from inadequately trained reporters. This is the one area that needs most attention with RTÉ News - big time.

Yes they are welcome changes alright. I hope they're listening to us! And credit where its due: they have done a wondeful job on the temporary set now haven't they. Its almost impossible to pick out any differences (aside form the obvious plasma missing) so well done to them for that.

EDIT: I know well about BBC N24 diarmy - the exact same thing happened to me! I got addicted to it for a good while Embarassed but I still prefer it to $ky News anytime.

I did for a while too, but since Sky got up their own a$$ about the whole 'Breaking News' ****, I've lost interest. They're on a par with The Sun now at this stage for sheer unbridled sensationalism. Sad thing is though that Sky are still the benchmark for presentation and I fear BBCN24 is going down the same road.

RTE still packs in the Irish perspective though (and only on Irish stories, I don't find them good on international stories) so that's their saving grace for me.

Tonight's Evening Herald claims that brown and cream are indeed in with the new look, apparently its' more "contemporary". Also Sharon Ní Bheolan is being made the centre of attention apparently, being placed in between Dobson and a sports presenter. Hmm...

Means the above graphic may well be near enough to the actual new look...
