They wouldn't dare! They know better than to mess with RTÉ's finest
(well, hairstyle aside)
Annnnnyway, back on topic and something I meant to mention yesterday that has been picked up on Boards.ie, if you scroll to 7.57 or so on the Autumn Schedule promo, you'll see a rather odd but nonetheless never-seen-before animated graphic for RTÉ News.

Brown/gold/cream in colour, it looks very much like an in-house job in terms of its apparent frumpiness and general clutter. I like the colouring a lot, but I hope the rather naff semi-cartoonlike elements are not a feature of this new scheme. It'd remind you of 1992-94!
Rather ironic they include the coverage of the 1916 Commemoration in light of the botched job they made of it.

I really really really really really really hope this isn't what's in store for 2 weeks time. It's hideous. The colouring as Teilifis remarked is ok, but the text is too boring and generic, the animation is awful and the overall look is more of a 3D rendering of house plans rather than a news intro. RTE CANNOT use just graphics this time. For the past 10 years they've used nothing but graphics as their intros. It's time to move on with real-life images of some inanimate object like Sky's use of the real globe or the BBC's countdown thingy that commands attention from the viewer, or ITV's use of a clock (albeit entirely graphical).
And if RTE do use this brown thing as an intro they'll lose even more viewers. I'm amazed at how many people complain subconciously about this awful intro music and comments such as "I give them 2 minutes before they have a major f**k up!".
One more, rather on-topic item, is this business of the constant coverage of the Middle East crisis on Six, Nine and One of late. It's as though RTE's prayers have been answered in that they now focus on just one story (meaning all correspondants can have a free holiday on tax-payer's money) and RTE can appear to be global in its news presence. The fact is, RTE is actually infuriating the public with the coverage of the Middle East crisis. It's so far from home in its roots that people just don't care anymore. Sky News has done its part for completely turning people off televisual news with its constant streams from Iraq and the Terror War. I fear BBC News 24 is falling into the trap also, however they allocate less time to the Middle East than Sky. RTE cannot afford to keep doing this now. There are plenty of newsworthy stories in Ireland at present (even taking into account that the Dail is off duty - which seems to be the main source of news for RTE). RTE need their viewers to keep watching its awful news service - otherwise the advertisments in 3 places during the show and before and after the 6 news will lose interest. Especially if RTE is going to unleash a horrid ball of brown s**t on us all in 2 weeks!!
There's still time to render something else. Even ressurect the 1997 title music and wire-frame graphics, change the colour to more green than blue and launch in 3D again instead of this horrid mess.

Strange - a flag type effect - it reminds me a bit of the old Anglia Television logo for some reasons, or (less) of the original look of BBC News 24. Not sure I like the colours. It's possible this is mocked up for the promo however.
Still, it uses the genre logo so at least that would reduce the number of RTÉ News logos to two...

Thanks for that diarmy. I was dying to see what the fuss was about.
That graphic is truly hideous! What the hell is it supposed to be? To me, that looks like an oil drilling platform out in Uzbekistan or the likes. I hate the colouring to be honest. Black with brown? What are they smoking up there? It looks like something out of a 1950's movie to me. Another step backwards if this is the real thing. This is probably the most important rebranding of RTÉ News that they have ever done so far and this is what they come up with. What a mistake. The only thing I can say is that I sincerely hope that this is a random graphic produced on the spot just for the sake of having a different look in the promo - like the blue one with the globe back about a year ago. I really hope this isn't a preview. Granted I can't see the thing in animation but I don't give a toss - that is the worst thing they could have dreamt up. It makes TG4's graphics look good!

That's exactly what it looks like - couldn't put my finger on it earlier
. There's no depth to it at all, and the intense detail and bizarre 'emblem' is so early 90s in concept. But it is all brown I think - don't think anything looks black in the animation.
In all fairness now I doubt this is it - it is way too frumpy for what even RTÉ must be acknowledging to be a crucial relaunch. They'll be very much on a sleek, crisp, cool drive and no doubt will do their best to achieve this. If anything, the above animation is rather suited to the current set more than the current titles - the colouring ties in well.
It's definitely not a finished polished product anyway, as the 'RTÉ News' text is straight while the block it is on is curved - clearly thrown together for the promo. While it's a very odd thing to do in terms of going to the effort, and in terms of the weird look chosen, I think (hope!) we can rest assured this is nothing like what we're getting.
Given it's the summer, I'd let them off the hook re Lebanon diarmy. There's feck all else to cover at the minute, but moreover, if you go to the expense of sending journalists abroad, you damn well make use of them! Richard Crowley is excellent, but his live sat links are rather humdrum every night, largely because of the scripted nature of the questions he's offered rather than his answers. And again I'd say that bloody hand mic really ties him down - Richard Downes is so much more engaging as he usually gestures with his hands etc. Not that the viewer needs to be distracted every 3 seconds, but this is television here, not visual radio. You add as much complementary interest as you can. Having Crowley standing there motionless, against a black sky, wearing a dark blue shirt, is hardly he most engaging of presentations.
