Well, this certainly is interesting. The main news studio must be undergoing a major refit. I've never known RTE News to be out of that studio so far in advance of a relaunch.
Telefís - you're pretty familiar with the layout of the building - would it be possible to extend that studio easily?

Don't get your hopes up yet. Its very possible that they'll launch the new news look before September. They might be in a hurry to get the news out in 16:9 in time for the launch of the DTT trial which is due to start in late August so just be weary. Don't get too excited because you might be disappointed.

Wouldn't say that's to do with the revamp - Its normal for RTÉ to chop down their their news output in August, with the One becoming an extended summary and Six-One being chopped in half. Having said that, its not too long ago that this lasted all summer and halfway into September, so we probably should be thankful...

Well here are some caps from the 6.01 today. I see that the bulletin has been chopped down to half an hour long with only one newsreader and 'Reeling in the Years' has been drafted in to fill up the void! I suspect Brian Dobson is taking his holidays now as Sharon did so over the past few weeks. And the listings for next Monday say that 6.01 will still be half an hour long so the construction of the new set will probably last at least 2 weeks. Is there any chance they're expanding Studio 3 and therefore taking the whole month of August to carry out the revamp?

I suppose you're right rdd, but I'm sure its more than a coincidence that the bulletin is chopped on the same day that the temporary set is brought into use!
Just two more caps I caught tonight during the Nine:
A clean wide of the temporary set; notice how the floor is spotless and actually shiny - you can even see a reflection in it:

And see how the picture window is slightly different here with no band above and below the picture:

Quite easily actually! the 'coming up' bit which comes on before the ads which are before the programme itself was shot with Anthony Murnane just sitting at the desk and the camera slowly zooming in. Its usually filmed right beside the plasma. It looked a bit dodgy but that's because, as Telefís said a few weeks ago, the cameras are being operated manually so there's no really smooth movements like with the remote controlled cameras.
Its quite ironic the way the set looks better in some ways now than it did for the last three years. Firstly, its far more spacious than it was and secondly, the set is actually much cleaner and tidier-looking with no wires visible, scruff-marks on the floor or paw-prints on the walls. Only in RTÉ...
