They're exceptionally plain dbl - simply a screen of a vibrant colour, with the Three logo and 3 circles over to the right adding interest.
Nearly too plain - can't see them lasting very long. Very much so a dispensible commercial ploy.

I like TG4's obscure, off-beat idents - even if a bit too contrived and achingly postmodern Smile. They're fun to watch and certainly offer a Súil Éile!
DTT trials are due to start in Septmeber Seamus, covering most of the east coast, and will last for two years, at whgich point it is hoped it'll be rolled out countrywide - quickly. Hopefully RTÉ will also lauch a satellite service at that point.

Anyone watching Nine last night? One of the most amateurish productions I've yet seen from RTÉ News - the gallery and studio doors were left wide open during transmission, enabling the viewer to hear every word uttered in the gallery for the full 27 minutes of the bulletin!
It was unbelievable - I heard every single bar one VT being called over the entire half hour! It was noticable from the very start where there was a heck of a lot of noise around the headline intro - by the first report it was clear the studio and gallery doors were wide open!

Truly astoundingly unprofessional - I was that close to ringing up the Newsroom and telling them to shut the feckin doors. Who is this idiot of a man directing - hiding behide the anonymity that the lack of credits on Nine affords.
Scroll in to 1.00 below to hear him calling a report VT as clear as day, or again at 4.45 - indeed any of the reports or LVOs. Some of the quality isn't great due to Realplayer:

It's interesting to note how much more relaxed Anne was last night, as if more reassured by the door being open...

And more bad pre-production and/or camera operation at 16.23. Watch the end of Anne's link and the following courthouse VT Rolling Eyes
And not only can you hear that VT being called like all the others, if you wear headphones during the awkward silence you can hear the director calling "cut", even though there's no camera ready. You then hear the vision mixer complaining something like "even though there's no camera?". The director then calls "yes, clear Anne" at which point an instant cut is made back.

Also note on the following Microsoft story, the VT kicks in way too late, in spite of the director calling it three seconds earlier Rolling Eyes
See how robotic Anne gets the second she realises the slightest problem has occured, when she sees the camera beginning to move Very Happy

Indeed if you want to know how a news bulletin is made, this is the programme to wtach with a decent set of headphones - you can even hear the director chatting away during Anne's links! (you could also hear that background noise last night).
Aside from the astounding unprofessionalism of it all, there is a nice director cue at 22.20 - a standard practice, but listen how he draws out the instruction "annnnnd in" when dissolving/mixing back from the VT. As much a cue to Anne as the vision mixer.

Damn!, My house is in Sligo.

What will it contain? Will it be the same 4 channels, or what?

I've replied on this thread if that's okay Smile

Now that really is very disheartening. It was interesting, but disheartening. How can they just sit there and let that kind of carry-on go out on air. I was hopeful that they might try to get their act together in September but at this stage I think we should expect more of the same. It just seems to be the way they do things. They don't seem to even notice the cracks in presentation and hell will freeze over before they start making a proper effort. Its a pity because they have let themselves down and are tarnishing the reputation of RTÉ, which, some years ago, was a good one but I'm not so sure now.

Perhaps her earpiece was broken.

The most interesting programme for listening for the floor manager was "Dick and Dom in da Bungalow" - if you listened carefully, the background music was used to try to drown out the floor manager's instructions. I know that sometimes the music was loud with verry little sound from the studio mics in order to give a live on air instruction as to what to do to get to the next filmed item segment within the prog.

Does anyone notice that Dobbo is WAY more relaxed lately?? Even on Six lastnight, as an LVO to Abbylara to a priest and a local was being streamed through, a tractor slowly drove past and drowned out the sound - Dobbo just said "that's alright, we'll leave the tractor pass"... and after Sean Whelan's report from Belgium on mobile-phones Dobbo said with a smirk "stands to reason doesn't it"... this kind of banter is reminiscent of Sky News in the olden days.

Another question, open to anyone but I'll bet Teilifís will know: The News Correspondants for RTÉ who we very rarely see, the Marine Corr, Jim Fahy, Education girl during the summer, etc... do they get paid a constant salary, or is it contractual between what they actually contribute? If it's a salary thing are they doing other things too outside of just reports for RTÉ? What's the story with it??

I saw that online, and I was thinking that that sort of thing could make RTE a bit better. I just hope the next studio isn't overwhelmingy bright.

Stunning evening backdrop of Dublin's quays last night on Nine - makes a change...

http://www.rp-networkservices.com/tvforum/uploads/david_murphy__dublin.jpg

Though the lighting of David was poor - even above you can see the big shadow that kept casting across his face.

Yes I've always wondered about the likes of Tom MacSweeney too diarmy - Colm Connolly, the former Arts and Media Corr would be another (though he may still be with them). It's quite possible these people are employed as producers of radio or television programmes too - certainly MacSweeney presents a regular radio programme 'Seascapes' which keeps him busy.

Margaret Ward, Foreign Editor is another - haven't the faintest what she does for most of the year. A fantastic corr though, particularly on Eastern Europe and Russia. She really ought to be utilised more by RTÉ - a shameful waste

So whether these people are employed on a contractual basis or not I have no idea. Though they do have full working titles, so one would assume they're fully paid professionals...

That is a nice background indeed. Its unusual to see them going to the bother of finding such a nice spot! They also seem to have cleaned up Studio 3 - there didn't seem to be so many scruff marks on the floor and the desk was nice and tidy with no microphone wires hanging out all over the place. Mind you, it could be back to normal by now but why did they bother cleaning it up when they'll only be in that set for another month?

And where will they erect the temporary set when the time comes? Studio 2 perhaps? Is there a Studio 6 or 7? I wonder will they construct the temporary set with just the desk and the back wall or might they use a CSO background like before the News 24 relaunch? Hardly!

Michael Murphy is back on our screens! This morning shortly before 10am he appeared in a Headlines bulletin, sporting a Paxman-esque tie, trademark tweed suit and the epic voice of perfect deliverence... Rise quickly through the ranks kind sir, and relieve the Dobbo (or DUBbo) from the stress of mucking through an hour of programming.

Bring Back Micheál - Even for the 'cúpla focal' he'd add to the whole thing.

PS. Lovely background with David Murphy (who wears a grey suit... honestly!!!) ... shame it's him though, his voice is head-wrecking... and the headroom is appauling. Even if they just stumbled upon the shot by accident, it's a step in the right direction!

Great to hear about Michael Murphy! I hope they integrate him back into a good slot when they relaunch - he'd be a great replacement for Anne Doyle on the Nine but we all know that will never happen Rolling Eyes .

Anyway I was looking at Brian Kennedy's new show tonight (purely for the production values, of course Embarassed ) and I was a bit surprised to see that they seem to have put a bit of effort into the set. Now its nothing spectacular but I think you'll agree that its much better than the usual rubbish we see on our screens (COUGH Saturday Night With Miriam COUGH). The floor looks a bit more expensive than usual and there are some nice LCD things in use in the background above the set granted they are the very same ones used for the Eurosong 2006 Late Late Show and the final few editions of You're a Star 2006. I know the set is quite small but it looks fairly OK. However the jib camera-work is diabolical. Either its a poor quality jib, the studio is too small or the operator is inexperienced but either way it looks dreadful on-screen. I'd say myself that the operator hasn't a clue how to use a jib-camera properly. Its the very same during the Late Late and Tubridy Tonight - very jerky and moving way too fast!

And out of curiosity - is this Studio 4 or Studio 1? I think its a bit too small to be Studio 4 so I'd say its Studio 1 but I'm probably wrong. Here's a few caps:

Edit: And I only found out today that Red Bee will be desiging BBC One's new idents this autumn as well as RTÉ One's so it should be very interesting to compare them when they both launch. I wonder will there be a big difference in the quality of the idents? I can't wait!
