Was indeed. Her hair was less ridiculous tonight than usual - a welcome relief
. The presenting rota for Nine this week was very strange - neither Doyle or Dunne were on, resulting in Una taking two days and Ken Hammond taking three.
Ken is well suited to presenting on his own, being so distinguished with his hanky n all, but really he does rush things so. His deliverance is often way too fast, and he can come across as almost bored; inconvenienced by the fact that he actually has to read something. He often just churns out the script in a stilted fashion, his eyes blankly scanning across the autocue, getting the link over and done with as quickly as possible. And as for his questioning
...
Such a shame considering his other fine qualities as a newsreader.
When is Una coming back to Six One does anyone know? And what's the reason for her absence - seemingly being able to do only late shifts is rather strange...

Im no expert in these matters, but i think Sharon Ni Bheolain has bedded herself in the Six now. I cant see Una - although by far the superior presenter - returning to the Six on a full-time basis.

Its anyone's guess why she left. I have to agree with bbcsport, Sharon seems to have settled down in the Six-One and removing her again seems a bit unlikey since she's been there so long now. I wonder is there any chance at all that Úna was given the boot?
Has anybody noticed that they now seem to be using a generic RTÉ endboard at the end of their own programmes? It looks quite nice IMO and has the correct font etc. I like to see consistency like that being spread across the board. But at the start of some programmes, the RTÉ genre is not always displayed in the titles eg. fair city. Is this intentional? i have a feeling its not

Indeed - it's not very consistent at all. Quite a number of productions have no titles.
Yes the new end board looks well, and dissolves on and off perfectly, and holds on screen for just the correct length of time. They've got something right at least!
Regarding the long-running Una saga , it was mentioned here before that she was only temporarily doing late shifts for personal reasons, and that she'd be returning to Six One soon.
I can see her returning - she is by far the more senior of the two newsreaders and has greater clout over Sharon; this is how the Newsroom operates, as dated as it may be.
Not a fan of Sharon have to say, though I do think she works better leading a bulletin - her older Sunday evening bulletins were generally carried off very well. Above all though I just don't like the way she's turned Six One into a fashion contest; her appearance and general demeanor is given much greater impact when contrasted with the older Dobson alongside. Everyone I watch Six One with now cannot get through a bulletin with commenting on her in one way or another. She diverts attention away from the stories, as unintentional as it may be - something that is much less noticable when she's presenting alone, and when wearing clothes less suited to that of a period drama.
The contrast in presenters' ages for Six One is just too stark to be carried off comfortably - distractionlessly as it were.
Just beginning to notice that Una has just the faintest, slightest south Dublin inflection in her voice from time to time, the only television newsreader that has it! It's noticable when she says words like 'account', which she pronounces as 'accant', allbeit only faintly. Quite the scandal in the newsroom I'm sure.

Isn't Six One is following the lead of the BBC's Six, with a respected, experienced journalist alongside a younger, good-looking female co-anchor (
sorry to be so patronising and stereotypical, but its true IMO )?
Bryan Dobson & Sharon Ni Bheolain : George Alagiah & Natasha Kaplinsky.
If Anne was ever to leave the Nine, wouldn't Una replace her? And Sharon would remain on Six One?

The very point I was going to make - RTÉ are indeed copying the BBC, achingly so. Nothing unusual there. Just as with the BBC Six, Six One I feel has lost a certain element of credibility with the juxtaposing of the two presenters - it's so patently apparent as to be distracting, so typical of the drive to spice up news and current affairs with needless fluff. Dobson and O'Hagan simply worked - no one could deny that surely.
As for Doyle leaving Nine - not likely in the forseeable future, but if it happened Dunne is waiting in the wings, as is Hammond and other newscasters who have been in RTÉ as long, and in some cases longer, than Una. Not to say that Una's not a contender though.

I've just been meandering through the RTE website and realised that you can access RTE News broadcasts in video going back to 12th March 1999!
I am going to take a look at that.
bbcsport, I agree with you on Una. She might be a good anchor (I don't live in Ireland, nor can I watch RTE News at home without a computer), but I see Sharon being a better co-anchor with Dobson than Una. She is younger, and youth makes that much of a difference in today's media world.

Well thats a relief if they decide to do the news again...they decide to get a decent company in instead of opting for an in-house service! About time they learn!
Great news I would guess

i pray that the new look will look nothing like Red Bee's BBC London News, that relaunch was horrible!
