I don't usually do mocks but I was just playing around with an idea for RTÉ News when they relaunch or even an RTÉ News Channel. Its a very simple concept and not a million miles from what we have now but I think it would work on-screen. And you can probably tell there's some influence from Sky News and BBC News 24! The DOG would be semi-transparent and likewise with the ticker. Animations would be similar to BBC News 24 and would include the white bar at the side. Let me know what ye think!

This is the single-tier name aston:

Double-tier name aston with ticker:

Main news strap with ticker:

Breaking news strap with ticker:

Picture window (I woudn't get rid of it just yet...I think it looks even better in 16:9!)

...and finally the LIVE aston with a clock (if it were a 24-hour service):

P.S: its my first mock!

I like these mocks...they show your ideas well...although I would rather it worked on more but since your like a beginner its fine
What I find funny is everyone mentions the possible election...is Fianna Fail that bad? Wink

Nice and crisp stuff Phen - definitely more than a hint of News 24 in there! Very Happy. Very impressive first attempt. The only graphic I'd really revise is this aston:

http://www.rp-networkservices.com/tvforum/uploads/singletier_name_aston.jpg

The text is a bit tight don't you think? A bit more head and 'foot' room is needed I think.

This is very nice:

As is this:

...though perhaps the DOG stretching all of the way across to the edge of frame is a bit too far to go. I've never seen what the similar current Weather one looks like in full 16:9 , but I'd imagine it looks faintly ridiculous! This seems to be the reason why the BBC go with floating DOGs and LIVE tags etc.

Great attempt - that blue and grey scheme with elegant white highlights works surprisingly well. The fact that it looks good for the first time here is an indication of how poorly it is used at present. We never get to see it outside of business news tickers and sports results. And the above two-tier astons are far superior to the current 'professional' ones used Rolling Eyes Crucially the entire design of the aston doesn't change according to the text displayed!!!

I think that the Live tag is a little low down on your mock. I feel that there could be problems with obstruction when interviewing a couple of people.

Not to take anything away from Phen but seeing as he is recieving warm comments about being a first-timer, the mocks i did up last week were a first attempt too. Not to take anything from Phen... I read the mods comments on the Mocks forum and was a little scared to mention it was a first attempt.

I like your mocks Phen. They are very like BBC 24 though but the idea is cool.

Teilifís has a good point, the fact that a first-timer here doing up Mocks and Astons is proof if anything that the current ones used in RTE are a) crap, b) useless, c) unprofessional.

diarmy

P.S. Teilifis, thanks for the comments RE: finnerty on the previous page. He is a bit cold I'll give into that, but I still think he's way better than Dobson. Dobbo hasn't the charisma that anchors like Trevor McDonald or Dan Rather has, even though he has the potential being on the primary news show. But I am clutching at straws for Finnerty - ideally someone new would be brilliant. Had a mad notion of putting Finnerty into Pat Kenny's shoes for a week to see how he'd do!

Interesting to note finnerty has a media company (or had). It shows. Maybe all of RTE could go on a training course in simple speech delivery and reading auto-cue?? throw in a lesson on how not to direct and produce a news bulletin and I think it'd be a worthwhile adventure and good use of TV Licence funds!

I know this isn't the place for them, but Teilifis asked about mocks superimposed... all I could find was Anne Doyle... sorry!

The Larger Red box is the 16:9 vertical boundaries thanks to DBL in Mocks, and the smaller is the 4:3.

Thanks for the comments guys! I like that image with Anne Doyle, diarmy. The colours you used are brilliant.

PS: Telefís, I'll post a 16:9 capture of the weather later today.

cheers phen, wouldn't say they're brilliant - more along the lines of lazy Very Happy taking the lead from the RTE logo!! Laughing

Here are some captures from the weather after tonight's nine:

And I think I've figured out where the stretched maps come from - John Eagleton and Karina Buckley seem to be the culprits! Watch out the next time John Eagleton is doing a bulletin - I bet you'll see a stretched map. Karina herself seems to do it as well. I can't recall seeing any of the others doing it.

Thanks for the stills Phen - the weather looks great in 16:9!
And as suspected the DOG does look faintly ridiculous reaching across like that Smile
Haven't seen a stretched weather map in a while now thank goodness - perhaps you know different!

Can't believe what's happened on Questions & Answers - RTÉ has just invested in a big set of double lapel mics!!! Shocked
This means a complete ditching of nasty sticking-into-shot- back-up desk mics on Q&A and possibly Prime Time! Not even the BBC has done this - what a step forward!

Double lapels are usually only reserved for presenters, and generally for special occasions only, or studio production where the presenter is walking about a lot. For a whole set to be bought in for panellists is nothing short of extraordinary!
It does mean slightly bulkier mic units being pinned to people, but on balance I think it's better than having desk mics poking into shot. Also if a lapel mic fails (more often than you may think), the back-up lapel delivers better quailty sound than desk mics.

Here's Minister John O'Donoghue with his spanking new double lapel:

A step in the right direction...for once! But to be honest, I wouldn't have noticed it only for the fact that you mentioned it! It sure does look a lot better than the 90's style stick microphones.

If anybody saw Townlands on Sunday night, you'll have had a little behind-the-scenes look at the weather and (what I think was) the RTÉ One presentation suite/room/gallery (not sure what to call it!). I've never been inside RTÉ so I found it very interesting! They showed Evelyn Cusack with her computer putting in graphics on the charts and they also showed the weather studio. Its not very big but not very small on the other hand. It looks fairly modern but a bit untidy! However I think it was an old episode becuase all of the 'monitors' were just normal 4:3 portable televisions! Similarly with the pres suite, all of the monitors were 4:3. I presume they're all in 16:9 now. Pres suite is a fairly big and long room. Very interesting.

A lot of switching round of presenters on Six One lately - Dobson and Doyle, Dobson and Dunne and today, Dunne and Ní Bheoláin. I think Ní Bheoláin was sounding a but hoarse so she must have been ill recently.

Telefis
Or maybe she sounds like that all the time... Wink
Yes, a lot of chopping and changing on Six One of late. Not a sustainable state of affairs - the bulletin needs consistency.

I saw Townlands too, and yes it was an old episode given the 4:3 monitors. It was broadcast about 9 months to a year ago as far as I remember - was it not you Phen that mentioned seeing it before?!
The corridor you saw her walking down is upstairs in the Television Building (almost in the same condition as when extended in the late 1960s!) - the Den studio was almost across the corridor from her.

The weather studio did look a right mess alright - like a tornado hit it Very Happy
Weather presenters are another example of the use of double lapel mics.
