I'm not sure any of the Irish broadcasters handled the riots properly - the extended Six-One was worthwhile alright, but this was a big breaking story in Dublin and the only broadcaster that seemed to be covering it live was ILR station Newstalk 106, who had continous coverage (they still refered to the programme as the "Saturday Sports Show", but there was no sport on it). Radio 1 seemed determined to press ahead with sport, though they did have an extended news bulitten at teatime.

Sky News and BBC News 24 only seemed to notice later on in the afternoon - when trouble broke out around lunchtime only RTÉ was covering and there seemed to be a delay getting any video of the trouble until later in the afternoon. Even RTÉ's lunchtime summary only had a voice report accompanied by a still.

If ever there was an occasion Sky News Ireland could have opted out this was it, though they did have Ray Kennedy on hand to report for Sky News itself.

I was very suprised by the coverage. I was sure mabey Sky would opt out and possibly end up getting the UK to opt out too. But looking at Sky News Active there was no mention of the riots until I looked at the showbiz sectioin where it mentioend about Charlotte Chuch being unsafe in Dublin cos of it Shocked

But TV3 had their sport dominated bulitain i could only assume
Although i guess its good of RTE to extend their news but I suppose they could of done better. I bet it wouldnt of killed them to break into their afternoon programems of 200 year old films and repeates of crap programmes to cover something we do pay for, its called the news.

But Newstalk 106, outright is the best radio station. There are very few faults with the station IMHO and it better be recognised for it to rub it into RTE's faces who's only priority these days is with sport, sport, sport and sport.

In all seriousness he just uses it to remind RTÉ of the only reason they're still holding on to him - he can speak fluent Irish. Otherwise he'd be booted out in flash.

He says 'Oíche mhaith' meaning goodnight. Sharon Ní Bheoláin says it the odd time too.

Brilliant chair incident - hilarious!! Very Happy Very Happy
Oh how I love Six One since Sharon came on board - a veritable hive of entertainment; you never know what's going to happen next. She seems to have jinxed the bulletin...

Very stange wide at the end alright - indeed if you listen you can hear (though you shouldn't be able to Rolling Eyes ) the director loudly mouthing off something just before the cut is made. The camera they used for that was the sport presenter camera - they just pulled out to use it as a wide. The only reason I can come up with is that the camera they use for the usual wide on the right is the remote-controlled movable one that rolls about the floor. As Colm Murray signs off and hands back to Sharon for the business news, the wide shot of the desk there is also taken by that camera, but moved right in squeezed almost behind Colm. This is then usually rolled back out again to take the wide at the end - only I would guess that this camera is prone to breakdown. Wouldn't surprise me if they couldn't roll it out again because it broke down, so they quickly used the sport camera, hence the director's screeches to quickly change angle Smile
See how nervous they all are at the end being shot from a different angle Smile

Indeed it is ridiculous that you can so often hear the director mouthing off on RTÉ News through the newsreader's ear-piece being picked up by their lapel mic. Eileen Dunne seems to have bad hearing as hers is always turned up so loud you can even catch the odd word the director says on occasion! Shocked

That rolling camera isn't used often enough - tonight at the beginning of the Nine is the first time it's moved at the top of that bulletin in weeks!
Though perhaps they're better off not using it - the amount of noise it makes at times is unreal. Ever hear a deep grating rumbling sound emanating from your telly as the cut is made from the wide to the presenter MCU? Guess who!
Likewise at the end of News on Two, just when Murnane says smartly 'that's our lot for tonight', something of a bang can often be heard as the wheels of the camera get in motion, then the motors start whirring before the title music kicks in Rolling Eyes
You never usually hear the camera and the noise it makes, as all movements on all bulletins are masked by titles, but for whatever ridiculous reason some camera ops choose to reposition the camera during the first link on the Nine rather than wait for the first report to kick in - the racket it makes over the newsreader is unreal at times!

The chair incident can be seen here (even funnier when you know it's going to happen Very Happy).

About Aengus MacGrianna (sp?), could RTE possibly replace him with Ailbhe Ó Monacháin? I know he is TG4, but that's pretty much RTE, I believe. Aengus is just a wreck.

Bah, Ailbhe sends me to sleep with his voice, it always reminds me of the scene in the Father Ted Christmas episode where they pick the priest with the most monotonous accent to make the tannoy announcement.

What about Maolra Mac Donnchadha?

Maolra is pretty good - my not having perfect Irish by a long shot makes it rather difficult to work out the nuances of most Irish newsreaders, but he certainly comes across as the most affable of TG4's crew - something of an Anthony Murnane in how he handles bulletins and interviews. It is difficult to get hold of decent Irish-speaking presenters for television, so they're unlikely to be stolen by RTÉ for 'English duties'. Wonder how rates of pay compare with RTÉ...

Another quite hilarious cock-up on Nine tonight that some people may have seen - poor Eileen, you'd have to feel sorry for her. She suffered something of a Sharon Ní Bheoláin moment, and lost her voice - a newsreader's nightmare. The look of terror that swept across her face was most embarrassing to watch, but also quite funny I think you'll agree Very Happy

It's interesting that in spite of the nighmareish situation, she clearly didn't care what people thought of her in taking a drink, and was almost chatty in her handling of the affair - the consummate professional as always, whatever one may think of her humdrum reading style. Ní Bheoláin was clearly more embarrassed on her occasion.

Ah, god love her! Totally professional. And as for the story she was trying to get out . . .

"7000 homes in the Strokestown area of Roscommon are still without water after almost a week . . .

How apt! Laughing

Maolra is more preferable to Ailbhe IMO - reminds me a lot of Mike Nesbitt for some reason, not just in looks in presentation style too.

Classic clip of Eileen there Smile

Since we talked about Ailbhe and Maolra, what about Eimear Ní Chonaola?

And also, how do you pronounce the names of these presenters?
PH

Oh deary me...poor Eileen! I really felt for her there...much more embarassing than Ní Bheoláin's incident. But nevertheless she handled it fairly well. How ironic with the whole water in Roscommon thing! I'm beginning to think there's something in the air in that studio...a dish of water in the corner might go a long way! Unfortunate, but entertaining all the same!

This is how you pronounce these names:

Ailbhe Ó Monacháin = alva o munnachawn
Maolra Mac Donnchadha = mwale-ra mock dunnacha
Eimear Ní Chonaola = eemer nee chun-ale-a

Hope that helps!

Just watching some One bulletins there recently, really John Finnerty is very good at what he does.

His presenting style, whilst a bit eh, 'raw' shall we say Smile, is nonetheless personable and lively. His delivery makes him sound genuinely interested in what he's saying, unlike Dunne for example who is as flat and neutral as they come. His 'joltiness' cane be a bit distracting, but I suppose it's his way of adding emphasis Smile

Most importantly of all however for the One bulletin that is peppered with satellite link-ups, he's so efficient and natural in dealing with links and interviews for all the various feeds coming in. No other newsreader outside of Dobson is capable of so naturally pasting over all the cracks that join a bulletin together - Finnerty just glides over links and multi-camera cutting effortlessly: a seamless job.

Similarly his questioning is so natural as to make one wonder if he composes the questions himself on the spot - either way he clearly prepares very well for his bulletins. Normally I find link-ups nothing short of a farce - they tend to be so full of distractions and fumbling and blustering and clunky production values as to make it impossible to listen to a word that is being said, especially Doyle's on the Nine. The One link-ups however are so smooth as to hold your interest and focus it on what is being said - as all link-ups should be, i.e. done properly!

Top marks to Finnerty I say.

By the way who's responsible for this, it has to be someone here Smile. Came across it while looking for a pic of Finnerty:

Sadly, most of what's written there is spot on. RTE have got a huge task on their hands re the next relaunch of their TV news service. They are now lagging very badly behind most other world broadcasters in this respect. Every aspect of RTE TV news presentation is so terribly dated. Look at the news output from virtually any other European broadcaster - it's so much more impressive.

News programmes account for tens of hours of RTE TV's output each week. They really need to get this right.

- get the hell out of that broom cupboard of a studio
- please please please get an external agency to look at presentation: set and graphics
- hunt out new presenter/reporter talent

I wonder who the writer is? Are they on TVF? If they're not, they should be!
I think a lot of interesting points have been made in that post and I agree with it for the most part.

as the era of 24hr newscasting comes full circle, with almost every major network in the world dedicating a 24/7 news channel to its broadcast services, RTE still chugs along with its mediocrity, and its benign coverage of some of the country’s most newsworthy stories.

I think we would all love to see an RTÉ News channel but the whole digital deal with $ky has RTÉ's hands tied. I might be wrong, but I think they're only renting space on Astra 2D from $ky and not from SES Astra, the owners of the satellite. Therefore they can't go setting up a channel because (a) $ky is in control and (b) there's no DTT here yet.

I agree about Colm Murray and especially Fergal Bowers Evil or Very Mad but Aonghus Mac Gríanna can stay out of the newsroom, thank you very much. And I actually agree about Charlie Bird - if I were in Dublin that day, I'd probably have started hurling blocks at him too.

But the thing that struck me the most was this:

they all know (ie: workers at RTÉ News) that no matter how crap the news is presented, the cheque will be lodged every Friday. That nice security blanket that Government workers get to live with. Whereas in the real world, people have to think of such minor things as audience figures. RTE though seems not to have a care in the world.

This really sums up the attitude of RTÉ. They're simply not bothered. They know that they won't be told off for doing a bad job so thats what they do - a bad job. I've heard that there are plans to restructure RTÉ to be more like the BBC. These plans can't come soon enough.
