In all seriousness he just uses it to remind RTÉ of the only reason they're still holding on to him - he can speak fluent Irish. Otherwise he'd be booted out in flash.
He says 'Oíche mhaith' meaning goodnight. Sharon Ní Bheoláin says it the odd time too.
Brilliant chair incident - hilarious!!
Oh how I love Six One since Sharon came on board - a veritable hive of entertainment; you never know what's going to happen next. She seems to have jinxed the bulletin...
Very stange wide at the end alright - indeed if you listen you can hear (though you shouldn't be able to
) the director loudly mouthing off something just before the cut is made. The camera they used for that was the sport presenter camera - they just pulled out to use it as a wide. The only reason I can come up with is that the camera they use for the usual wide on the right is the remote-controlled movable one that rolls about the floor. As Colm Murray signs off and hands back to Sharon for the business news, the wide shot of the desk there is also taken by that camera, but moved right in squeezed almost behind Colm. This is then usually rolled back out again to take the wide at the end - only I would guess that this camera is prone to breakdown. Wouldn't surprise me if they couldn't roll it out again because it broke down, so they quickly used the sport camera, hence the director's screeches to quickly change angle
See how nervous they all are at the end being shot from a different angle
Indeed it is ridiculous that you can so often hear the director mouthing off on RTÉ News through the newsreader's ear-piece being picked up by their lapel mic. Eileen Dunne seems to have bad hearing as hers is always turned up so loud you can even catch the odd word the director says on occasion!
That rolling camera isn't used often enough - tonight at the beginning of the Nine is the first time it's moved at the top of that bulletin in weeks!
Though perhaps they're better off not using it - the amount of noise it makes at times is unreal. Ever hear a deep grating rumbling sound emanating from your telly as the cut is made from the wide to the presenter MCU? Guess who!
Likewise at the end of News on Two, just when Murnane says smartly 'that's our lot for tonight', something of a bang can often be heard as the wheels of the camera get in motion, then the motors start whirring before the title music kicks in
You never usually hear the camera and the noise it makes, as all movements on all bulletins are masked by titles, but for whatever ridiculous reason some camera ops choose to reposition the camera during the first link on the Nine rather than wait for the first report to kick in - the racket it makes over the newsreader is unreal at times!
The chair incident can be seen here (even funnier when you know it's going to happen
).

I often look at the monitor bank closely during the 'tonight at Nine' link to see if there's anything interesting on screen.
This circled here, from a while ago has bugged me:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y37/RTE1TV/Chroma1.jpg
Anyone know what it is?
My rather dubious guess is that it was used for the chromakey insert for that hideous 'picture unit' they have since done away with for Nine's main story:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y37/RTE1TV/Chroma3.jpg
As pictured above, this was the only bulletin that I ever came across where they gave the game away to a certain degree with the picture overlapping Eileen's arm there.
Is it possible that they do this trickery by making 'dead' certain portions of the screen like so:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y37/RTE1TV/Chroma2.jpg
...so that only the unhighlighted area is 'live'? (especially considering the set on either side is blue). And then they pull down a blue blind to the rear of the picture unit for the chromakey to work against?
The fact that only Eileen's blue arm is 'activated' outside of the picture hole area would suggest that it is working with a blue blind of some kind, as would the fact that the wide following the break always always avoided showing the unit:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y37/RTE1TV/Chroma4.jpg
...as did the closing wide:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y37/RTE1TV/Chroma5.jpg
Though saying all of that, there is still a reflection of the set evident in the glass surface of the desk...

While watching the Nine the other evening, I realised how much I've come to dislike Anne Doyle. She's so dull and lifeless now and really has gone past her sell-by-date. Its time for her to go. Just to keep the thread going till something interesting happens in the newsroom, I thought I'd make a list of all the people from RTE that should be kicked out. Of course, by all means add your own!
TO BE SACKED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE:
Anne Doyle (well not sacked - just shoved down to Radio 1)
Aonghus Mac Grianna
Niamh Nolan
Fergal Bowers
Micheal Lehane
Gerry Murphy (weatherman)
John Eagleton (weatherman)
Pat Kenny (let Ryan Tubridy in ASAP)
Derek Mooney

As much as it pains me to say it, I'd have to agree with what Phen says about Doyle – she has really let herself go. It must be her turning 50 that did it
It's so sad - even as late as 5-7 years ago she was miles better than what she is now. Her heyday was definitely around then, the time of the 1997 pres package.

There she is with her own title and everything
She used to be so efficient, so competent, authoritative, and ever so slightly 'knowing' in everything she said, delivered with a questioning raised eyebrow.
Now she's just got so lazy. She doesn't appear to read her scripts anymore, she stumbles over phrasing and slows down to almost stopping in trying to interpret the autocue. She doesn't sit up straight in the chair, she no longer commands attention, she no longer grabs the bulletin and makes it her own.
Instead she now operates like a machine, seemingly turning up at 20.55, glancing at what's on the running order and then switches into autopilot. She rattles through story links without any sort of engagement, churns out scripted questions in the most appallingly stilted fashion for reporter link-ups, again with no engagement, and fecks up nearly cue that there is possible to feck up in a news bulletin. Even watching her this evening I was in despair at how utterly lifeless she now is. A final wry smirk and ' take care, good night' no longer makes up for her all glaring faults of which there are now far many.
Also a major gripe that I have with RTÉ News which doesn't help her at all is how she is framed. She used to be tall and dominant in shot as pictured below on a rare occasion she was framed correctly - but nowadays she's slumped down at the bottom with way too much headroom, while at the bottom she is captured almost sprawling cross the desk. It looks appalling. Look at the difference between this elegant shot and the usual dumpy framing she's given:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y37/RTE1TV/Anne.jpg
And there's two other areas where she's incompetent. Those cringe-inducing links on Sunday bulletins passing from sports presenter back to Anne - good God can she not master something as simple as that? Week in week out she makes the same feckin blunder of waiting for her MCU before saying 'thanks Clare' instead of saying it in the wide shot which is its purpose - so we end up with a ridiculous awkward silence.
And the other area is when she's 'interviewing' reporters; without fail every single day after her second question you immediately hear her papers rustling as she turns back to compose herself for camera for the next story, not giving a sh*te for that fact that it's so patently obvious she's not listening to a word the reporter is saying. The odd time she even clears her throat in preparation! Indeed with the same sound mixers working every night, even they can't be arsed to turn down the levels for that paper rustling, nor has any director ever just told her to shut up!
Clearly Anne hasn't looked at herself on screen for at least ten years - I think she'd be genuinely shocked at how poor and unprofessional she has become.
And a further problem she's now inflicted on Nine is her moving away from Dublin as a permanent home. That's why she's now operating that eratic week-and-weekend on, week-and-weekend off, weekend-and-half-week on schedule, with the dull-as-dishwater Eileen Dunne filling in the gaps. Nine no longer has a distinctive identity now with the loss of a dedicated newsreader.
She's always been my favourite RTÉ newsreader - great voice, generally great appearance
, and used to have a great demeanour - it's such a shame to see her sliding away.
Anyway...
Poeple that must go most certainly do include
Aonghus Mac Grianna at the top of the list
Niamh Nolan
Fergal Bowers
Micheal Lehane
Gerry Murphy (weatherman)
John Eagleton (weatherman)
(can't agree with Kenny
)
Joe Little and his woeful reporting
Sharon Ni Bheoláin (sorry but it has to be done
)
Tom MacSweeney (Marine) and his hideously complied reports
Samantha Librari - good God just chuck her out the window
Robert Shortt in Washington. Maybe ring him back when he's grown up a bit more.
All RTÉ News directors - lock them in a room and burn em
On the plus side, people who ought to be promoted:
Anne-Marie Green - she compiles the most wonderful foreign news stories; sensitively and thoughtfully edited and scripted.
Anthony Murnane - give him the Nine. Or replace Dobson when that Doomsday eventually arrives
Ken Hammond - give him some decent interview coaching and maybe give him the Nine.
Anne Doyle - give her some decent interview coaching and maybe let her keep the Nine
David Murphy Business Editor - he was poor at first but his camera delivery is really improving, making him possibly the only reporter that actually relates to the viewer when delivering to camera. His editing still needs some work however.
Margaret Ward Foreign Editor - a truly superb reporter, that compiles the most visually and aurally engaging reports, packed with information and thoroughly explanatory. Unfortunately she only seems to crop up in Moscow three or four times a year and then disappears for the rest.....???
Seán Wheelan Europe Editor - again a Master Reporter
Tommie Gorman Northern Editor - bit strange and a tad erratic, but again a fine fine reporter that delivers great packages, especially for The Week in Politics.
If only there was a giant sieve that all of RTÉ's staff could be passed through, where all the crap would fall through the holes leaving only the gems behind sparkling on the wire mesh. Maybe one day...
