I'm not aware of any fundamental changes to RTE TV News pres at the moment though. Not sure if I mentioned this before but earlier in the year, RTE TWO was transmitting widescreen test transmissions just before Nightscreen in the wee small hours; don't think it happened that often though. Actual on-screen graphics from RTE Sport and RTE News were being used with text highlighting where the safe areas are. Unfortunately, the news graphics used were from the current package.
However, I still don't think we can rule out a new look in the New Year. I just can't believe they can continue with that awful looking set.
Changing the subject slightly, have you noticed that the channel DOGs are occasionally moving further to the left now on digital? I've certainly noticed it on RTE TWO. For true widescreen programmes I think the DOG still appears in 4:3 proportions in its old position and then reverts to a widescreen friendly version further to the left. Why exactly do they have the DOG displayed in its 4:3 format for the first few seconds? Am I missing something?!?

Yes there have been no changes at all - crucially the TV Room mentions that RTÉ News is going widescreen in 'early 2006'...I'd love to know TV Room's source on this 2006 date - if you're around...hint hint

I think the arrangement with the short bulletins is that the newscaster is supposed to key in the text ahead of the bulletin. As the late night person is also responsible for reading the news on RTE Radio 1 (I think this is still the case), they may not have had time to key in the script. You'll notice that on a very odd occasion, the late news on RTE ONE is skipped and you might get the weather only. This is because the newcaster hasn't got back in time from Radio 1. Look out for this when TV bulletins get very close to the radio broadcast. This happened again within the last couple of months I'm nearly sure.

down for late bulletins, perhaps even as often as 10% of the time. It looks so parochial and amateurish it seems like a joke.

Is there any particular reason, technical or otherwise, that when they know this is likely to occur that they could base the newsreader in the TV studio and feed the sound over to the radio service
It would seem the ideal solution.

This is the state broadcaster after all. It should *Not* be the same newsreader on both TV and Radio. And another question. (Rant) Who is that awful announcer that is on weekdays introducing programmes?? He speaks sooooo sslllooowww. He sounds like someone that should be on the HorrorChannel. RTE is good, sometimes. Othertimes they are an embarrasment.

I can't STAND his voice. It soooooo irritating. He sounds like he's trying to swallow something and speak at the same time. He has to go! Dunno who he is though.

Yes, I know the guy you're talking about. Totally inappropriate voice for broadcasting. Sounds like a voice played back on tape at half the speed.
If I were to pick out the best voices in RTE TV continuity: my number one would be Helen Curran (nee Leonard), very closely followed by Karina Buckley.
There's a fellow with a Northern Irish accent on RTE TWO these days who needs some rough edges taken off: some rather broad Northern pronunciation slips out from time to time.

I agree. She should be heard and not seen. Personally, I find her EXTREMELY irritating on the weather. She's so slow and lazy. She'd be better off doing an evening prayer or something like that. AND she is either completely ignorant of 4:3 safe areas or she couldn't be bothered to move over a bit. She is constantly out of the screen - even on 14:9L.

As with so many weathercasters
Sorry, can't agree with you about Karina, I think she's flippin fanastic!
Okay that doeful look and slow speech can get a bit irritating, but she's so very professional and looks like she can handle anything - she's nice and genuine in contrast to Nuala Carey who is the most pathetically contrived, Gaiety School of Acting, partronising individual on RTÉ Television
It is astounding the patronising 'Good evening [pause for 2 seconds] and welcome [pause for 2 seconds] she does. And all her contrived hand gestures learnt in her 'How To Be a TV Presenter' course
And as for her D4 accent: cloudy becomes 'clady', south becomes 'sath', right become 'rigssh' and 'north becomes 'nooorth'.
And here's your summary charsssh - grrrrrrrrrrr...
Karina is great on continuity though, one of the best if not the best after that older woman (?) who's been there for years. By contrast, I think Helen Curran is a joke - sorry but the tone of her voice and the way she speaks is like that of a 7 year old trying to read a prayer at their First Communion - she has an impish silly tone that is unsuited both to the weather and especially continuity I think...
Agreed about your man during the day - who the hell is that?!! It beggars belief he was even considered let alone hired!!! As said, he sounds like he's trying to swallow something while he's speaking!
I think it's that idiot Paul O'Flynn who presents that News2day bulletin for kids - he is the most embarrassing person to watch on television by a long shot, you really don't want to see him in action - no really you don't, save yourselves. Where do RTÉ dig these people from?
Yes the competition between the television news and Radio 1 news always makes me laugh - will he make it in time, will he make it - nah they'll go to the weather first
Often wondered if the radio 'Newsroom' is in the Radio Centre or the Television Centre - I suspect it's the latter given the potential difficulties and inefficiencies in transmitting info across to a duplicate newsroom. Anyway I can't exactly see Ken Hammond running across the car park in the rain to make the 11.50 news in the main building
The output of the Single Operator Control Room/Studio is as woeful as ever. As always after the Late Late on Friday, with over 500,000 people watching there were the usual shimmering lines at the bottom of the screen, the usual crudely blasting titles, the usual dodgy lighting, the usual crappy astons and DOG, and of course the lack of mixes/dissolves or anything remotely inventive or suited to any special circumstance. A farce all round.
The RTÉ DOGs on both channels were made a bit smaller recently, largely in response to complaints it seems, despite the fact that the main complaint is their very existence in the first instance

I hate the way Micheal Lehane speaks AND I hate that Niamh Nolan's voice wherever the hell she came from. And as for Fergal Bowers, Michael Fisher and Jim Fahy...don't go there!
That Ruth McAvinia who does the sport on news on 2 seems petrified in front of the camera. I remenber seeing one of her first newses and she was diabolical to put it nicely. However she has improved a sight since then but still seems too stiff, particularly when she hands back to the main presenter.
