I know it's an old chestnut, but really the state of the Newsroom floor over the course of this week is the worst I have ever seen it - it is a disgrace.
Whether there's a reduced maintenance staff over the summer or what I don't know, but the floor is covered in scuff marks and scrapes, some of them so extraoridinarily large as to lead one to wonder if the place is hired out as a skateboard park when off-air.
It hasn't been touched over the course of this week, resulting in it being manky dirty by Friday's Nine with an accumulation of a week's filth. I was watching it with disbelief getting progressively worse as each day went by.
Tonight's Nine just took the biscuit, a complete joke - shame on RTÉ News.

Shame on them is right. Any word on what they plan to do soon? I hope they redesign the studio but I'd leave the graphics the way they are. I don't think they need to be replaced just yet (apart from the astons).
The current studio could cope with 16:9 output quite well though. There's plenty of space for wide shots of each newsreader (as opposed to TV3 who'll need a bigger desk). In a way I hope they don't do anything to the studio at all so when they go for a full relaunch they can pull out all the stops.

Yes the clock is ticking for the switchover alright.
Already 'Saturday with Miriam' was shot in 16:9 at the beginning of the summer - the very first RTÉ studio production ever to be shot in the format.
Likewise there's a programme about the RTÉ Concert Orchestra on Monday nights that's just been recorded in another of their studios (probably S4) and it is also in 16:9 - so it seems all of Montrose is being upgraded over the summer.
Unfortunately as a result the flagship Late Late will now return in the autumn in glorious 14:9 too
- despite the vast vast majority of viewers watching on 4:3
If they do keep the set for the Newsroom, 16:9 may actually result in an improvement floor-wise because the widescreen format obviously has an horizontal emphasis, so it'll be easier to frame the wide with less floor in shot - well in theory anyway...
And just think - the in-studio monitor won't have a stretched 4:3 image on it anymore!!
If there is going to be change, and going by the September 'deadline' as it were, there's only a week left in the life of the current format before a change!
Oooh how exciting
Indeed this coming week may very well be the messy 'transition' week, so start looking out for tell-tale signs - that is if you can distinguish them from the usual shoddy production values

At last!!!
Now I know Telefís doesn't like the news in 16:9 but I think the switch-over will help to make RTÉ News look a bit better. The sting for the late bulletin doesn't look too bad and I presume the rest of the graphics/titles will be very similar to that. I really hope they keep the picture windows. If they did they'd be one of the only broadcasters to still have them after going wide.

Nope, RTE News has a very brief round up of the regional news, takes about 5 seconds!
RTE have a show called Nationwide, more of a cultural thing to be honest then a news show, but RTE's annual report catorgises {sp?} it as news and regional news for that matter

The RTE One network has the facility for regional opt-outs, but this is rarely if ever used. They tried two trial schemes - 5 minute opts in Six-One in the mid-1990s, and then seperate regional versions of Nationwide around 2002-ish. Both lasted a couple of months at most. As far as I know, none of the other networks can be opted out on.
