To his credit, he handled it well, seemed completely unfazed by what was going on and carried on as best he could. RTÉ has had its fair share of hiccups - this was one of the best handled ones I've seen.

Probably because of the match in Croke Park yesterday, they often do that.

Sports news on Six-One came from Croke Park tonight, oddly.

Sorry about the crap quality, these are from a DVD recording, and they're only caps because I have absolutely no idea how to turn a .VOB into something that can be downloaded and seen...

Colour scheme is blue for evening, red for "Nightly News", not sure what for Ireland AM. The caps don't really sell it, but this look is far far more mature and subtle then anything TV3 has ever done before, the animation of the titles and music are particularly well done (by Irish standards, nee RTE's crappy stuff)
EDIT: OK, so it's possible to convert a VOB to an MPEG2 file by changing the file extension, but unfortunately when I try to edit the MPEG in Windows Movie Maker... I can't. So... caps it is then, until somebody else gets a vid.

Ireland AM is orange, though it of course doesn't have news titles.
Also, The Week in Review uses the blue titles, but its opening sequence simply reads "3 NEWS". I suppose its handy to have those titles on standby incase the News at 5:30 ever needs to be moved for any reason.

I just think the '3' in the box looks daft unless they use that as their new logo but then they've only had the current one about 18 months!

Another weather blooper just after the Bill tonight
The weather map appeared on screen with no presenter. Then you could hear some music that sounded like it was being played off a tape in the studio. Then Nuala stepped in front of the screen, appeared to turn off the music and went on with the forecast.

Pity it looks like "3 NEWS AT 5.3" with the presenter sat in front of the "0". Bit of an obvious thing to try to avoid on your main opening two-shot...
(BTW - .VOBs are a very specific format - changing the extension to .MPG may let other applications open them - but they aren't really the same thing. It gets complex...)
