Talking of new looks, we finally have a launch date for TV3 Nightly News with Vincent Browne - 11pm on 14/1/08. Presumably the remaining "ordinary" news bulliten on TV3, News at 5:30, will also get a new look on this date.

Bit of a shame to have only one main bulletin. I'm guessing Vincent Browne won't last more than a year.

I'd guess as much, he doesn't sit very well with the rest of TV3's output which is rather low-brow. Given they have been allowed to axe the 18:30 bulitten, I'm wondering how the BCI can enforce them keeping the 23:00 bulitten if (when) Browne leaves.

the problem with the 6.30pm bulletin was the timeslot, it was better for them to have kept it at 7pm, but ITV and TV3 prefered to have Emmerdale simulcast (which does make sense).

At least TV3 is now trying, i mean they do produce Ireland AM and RTE still haven't announced anything about their proposed breakfast show

Interesting logo...looks a lot better than the current TV3 News identity...

Wonder will TV3 adopt the "3" from that logo as their station logo in the future...they have been using the "3" figure from the current logo since day one although they put in a circle in 2006.

As for RTÉ, they have been talking about a breakfast news programme since the late 1990s. I'll believe it when I see it.

wow, a new three logo. Would be strange having the nightly news use a new logo. Perhaps next week sees a complete relaunch?!?

It's quite strange to see a news programme logo so inconsistent with the channel's. If they were trying to create a separate image purely for news, perhaps they could have written 'TV3 Nightly News' in the chosen font. But the fact that it just says '3' and is stylised (right-aligned 3 in a red box) suggests that this may actually be a new logo for TV3.

Of course the fact that this is something that can be speculated about shows how used we are nowadays to bland, uninspiring logos. I'm pretty sure I've seen this logo used before. Maybe it was an actual Channel 3 somewhere in the world, maybe it was a mock, but the point is that it's unoriginal and I could have designed it myself. This is not a compliment - I haven't an artistic bone in my body. It's just Helvetica, the colour red and a square FFS!!! This is not design.

So until we find out what's going on, one of two conclusions can be drawn:

1. TV3 have decided to rebrand despite having one of the most unique, versatile and instantly recognisable logos in Ireland. They have chosen an idiot with MS Paint and Helvetica (or Arial) to design their new logo.

2. Someone has allowed these titles to slip through the net of brand consistency. It's one thing having a distinct look for a news programme (another bulletin launching on the 14th being the perfect example of this), but it's another to allow someone to "design" what is esentially a new channel logo for it.

Although neither option is particularly favourable, I hope it's the second. As I said, TV3's logo is pretty well recognised at this stage. A channel and its idents can evolve with its logo remaining the same, Channel 4 being a perfect example. I know this new guy seems to want to put his stamp on TV3, but I hope he has the sense not to do something like this.

I saw an ad for it lastnight. I don't know if the ad was shot on the set that will be used for the show but it didn't look great... It was just an animated background and a plasma screen. The new red logo (which I guess they'll use for all of the TV3 News bulletins) looks awful and the massive number 3 to the side is nothing like TV3's logo. Something about it reminds me of that 20/20 current affairs show they used to have.

Current affairs was not the word to describe 20/20 (which only aired for the first few months or so of TV3's life). Essentially it was the ABC US programme 20/20 with Irish presentation and one Irish story a week. I dunno, if ITV are allowed to get away with calling Tonight... a current affairs programme I guess you could call it that.

As for TV3 Nightly News...an ad in today's Phoenix has the red "3" alongside the familar TV3 logo. Guess its only for TV3 News so....

Yep, fully concur with everything that's been said. pickle104 summed up up nicely - little more to be said on that bland, globalised shambles of an identity that eschews one of the most recognised logos in Ireland. Awful.

Incidentally this exact programme is something I've thought for years RTÉ should be doing on RTÉ Two late at night. News on Two is still the (marginally better) disjointed shambles it always was - trying to merge youthfulness and brevity with the main RTÉ News brand, compromising both agendas in the process.

A more journalistic conversational route is precisely the slant News on Two should be taking, along the lines of BBC News 24 and Sky News during the newspaper roundup late at night. It's the perfect role for the bulletin given a youthful slant is inappropriate given the (at last) increasingly grown up image of RTÉ Two, while also ensuring it doesn't duplicate the Nine with a conventional approach. It would also allow some of the better newscasters to flex themselves.

Obviously Browne couldn't be taken into the RTÉ Newsroom given the established staff and hierarchy etc yawn etc, but it's definitely an idea to consider. Once Browne flounces out in April, RTÉ should move in for the kill, only they should give it a few months to make it appear it was their own idea. You gotta hand it to them - they're experts in that field at least.
