Phen if RTÉ News does do widescreen in Sept, yes the news will be broadcast in 14:9 - this is standard practice amongst all EBU members.
The BBC also broadcast their analogue news in 14:9 - have you not noticed? Ever since they launched 16:9 about 5 years ago its been like this.
I fully agree though - whatever about shooting what are expensive programmes such as drama in 16:9 so as to 'future-proof' them, news or indeed any current affairs output should not be, especially in Ireland where an overwhelming minority of viewers are watching on Sky and so can appreciate the 16:9.
I think it is a disgrace that an audience paying a private company to watch our public service broadcaster, are dictating what the majority of the licence-paying public are seeing on their screens, i.e. a cropped 14:9 image, so they can watch 16:9 on Sky.
If RTÉ was not on Sky, there would be no need for the station to change from 4:3 until they launched their own digital service.14:9 is a horrible compromise for news and current affairs, and is unfair the majority audience.
That's really interesting Sky News Ireland about the Election design - any hints as to the look?
You said before that all they use on previous occasions is a modified Prime Time set - they didn't last time at least, if not every time too.
While not fantastic it had a nonetheless crisp modern look in 2002, with nice '2002' frosted glass panels, and carpeted circular stages (though the desks were Prime Timesque all right

)
Studio 4 this time round too I presume? If you have any influence, please ensure that they get someone who actually
knows
how to operate a jib-arm this time round - last time it was simply appalling - jerky bumpy ridiculously fast shots were taken of the studio coming back after breaks etc, and all over complete silence! No lead-in music was even composed!
Studio 4 can look great for elections - huge amounts of floorspace always looks well. Regardless of CG sets and all the technical wizardry nowadays, there's still no beating a cavernous studio
