i know its much smaller has less detail ect, but i think a smiliar idea but on a larger scale would be good for rte.

Managed to get hold of some 'behind the scenes' pics of the RTÉ News studio - quite a low ceiling like the BBC.

Notice anything a little strange about these images?
Perhaps the last image below will give it away if you haven't sussed already Very Happy

Phen if RTÉ News does do widescreen in Sept, yes the news will be broadcast in 14:9 - this is standard practice amongst all EBU members.
The BBC also broadcast their analogue news in 14:9 - have you not noticed? Ever since they launched 16:9 about 5 years ago its been like this.
I fully agree though - whatever about shooting what are expensive programmes such as drama in 16:9 so as to 'future-proof' them, news or indeed any current affairs output should not be, especially in Ireland where an overwhelming minority of viewers are watching on Sky and so can appreciate the 16:9.
I think it is a disgrace that an audience paying a private company to watch our public service broadcaster, are dictating what the majority of the licence-paying public are seeing on their screens, i.e. a cropped 14:9 image, so they can watch 16:9 on Sky.
If RTÉ was not on Sky, there would be no need for the station to change from 4:3 until they launched their own digital service.14:9 is a horrible compromise for news and current affairs, and is unfair the majority audience.

That's really interesting Sky News Ireland about the Election design - any hints as to the look? Smile
You said before that all they use on previous occasions is a modified Prime Time set - they didn't last time at least, if not every time too.
While not fantastic it had a nonetheless crisp modern look in 2002, with nice '2002' frosted glass panels, and carpeted circular stages (though the desks were Prime Timesque all right Smile)
Studio 4 this time round too I presume? If you have any influence, please ensure that they get someone who actually knows how to operate a jib-arm this time round - last time it was simply appalling - jerky bumpy ridiculously fast shots were taken of the studio coming back after breaks etc, and all over complete silence! No lead-in music was even composed!

Studio 4 can look great for elections - huge amounts of floorspace always looks well. Regardless of CG sets and all the technical wizardry nowadays, there's still no beating a cavernous studio Smile

well its only a mock, but i am thinking of submitting a few desgins to rte to show them what could be done, or they could use as a template.

i havent it polished at the moment, im still in the process of finishing,
this is just a quick peak at the one im making. i just threw in the BBC election night titles, becouse the test card/colour bars kinda make it look a bit messy. and im using bitmaps, i know u hate it, but its just to show it much better!

What?(!)

oooh, your mock is rather snazzy Smile. Looks well, though RTÉ (and indeed the BBC) always go for mutiple desks & stages to deal with different issues during the night - though perhaps you just haven't included the full scheme here.
The desk with in-built angled monitor units reminds me of that classic 1997 News desk Smile

Have to be honest and say I'm not a major fan of multi-coloured perspex walls and big screens etc about the place - though am open to being swayed Smile. Certainly yours is much more streamlined and contemporary than some of the schemes they've concocted in the past.
The lighting is impressive, and the illumnated flooring to the left can be recycled from the Millenium set of 2000, an all-important factor for RTÉ Smile
Indeed all of this set must be recyclable for 38 other productions into the future - have you factored this into the design Sky News Ireland? Very Happy

btw i didnt mean u would hate the mock, i ment the fact it is a bitmap

well if RTE waited a while for their new news set, they could use all the rear projectors! the floor, well i got the idea from the Winning Streak studio (where the big wheel is).

the desk, well again these could be sort of modified to suit a new news studio!
then again what is wrong with using it for the news studio! itv used their studio for election night, and man that looked brilliant!

im not really too sure on the walls myself, its hard to figure out to be honest. wood mightnt suit it too much, shiny things would kinda mess it. another thing im thinking is more screens but a bit too much on the screen. any ideas tell me!

i also want to add, which i forgot earlier, the floor (the lights are blue green and red) each would rotate constantly, and continue until a parliament has been voted for (ie. all floors would be blue is Fine Gael won ect, coilitions would be just the majority party)

where the camera is looking, is where a second screen is, at the moment im trying to decide where the interview set is. im thinking of extending it to the left (where the camera is) its hard to figure out at times!

i hope to have an updated version tomarrow

Well the black floor and background fit right in to Studio 4's setup anyway - ist is set up as such for most of the year till the Toy Show wrecks the place in December Smile

As for timber in backgrounds, it's very popular at the moment for television sets - it's got an air of those bespoke kitchens that everyone's into these days Smile
It can look exceedingly well in moderation, and if done properly, unlike the current News look where it looks like sticky-back plastic.

well i just had a really wierd view of the titles in my head,

it will start of with video clips of the campaign, a bit like sky news 1992 (as much as it pains me to say it!) which will all zoom out of each other like a tunnel of clips, an equal amount for each party, then as it continues it will enter the dail chamber where it will do a spin around with colours flying on the seats then it will get to the stage where the camera is positioned overlooking the chamber facing the Ceann Chairles (sp?) chair, and will then zoom out into the studio, dark with no one in it, then all the screens will reveal the election logo, then the view of the studio would slowly transform into the election logo and the night begins.

on the studio, well im thinkin of a new idea again with the walls, i want them to be kinda glowing but not too much. i like the idea i have at the moment but i dont think it suits elections for some reason. i think i might try with the wood, i just dont want to overcrowd the studio with wood! possibly newswalls but that would cost a bundle!

i'll continue thinking!

Yep, mostly films and didn't they show the OC as well?

That's an excellent set-mock Telefis!

Thank you kindly!

Yes a large proportion of TG4's output is English, though not in prime time. Perhaps as much as 40-50%. Don't quote me on that - just an indication more than anything as to the seemingly large amount outputted.

Yes Sky News Ireland, the Dáil incorporated into the graphics would look very well, as would footage of the campaigns - though these would have to be subservient to the greater scheme of the graphics so that the graphics themselves give the production an identity, rather than the appearance of an episode of Reeling in the Years Very Happy

Whereas Peter Snow-like graphics might be a bit much in the copycat stakes, certainly a mock-up of the chamber ought to be made up to represent seats. Don't think RTÉ have done this before.

Eileen Dunne has now taken over the Nine for the next 5-6 weeks - really beginning to bore me now though, don't know if she has that impact on others - but she's just so slow and monotonously methodical in her reading that's she bore you to tears while reading.

The same boring links, the same pauses, the same folded arms on desk - for most of the links like going to the break, they might as well play the VT from the day before they're so similar. Of course there's a professionalism in consistency, like Trevor McDonald, but Eileen has just no life in her reading at all - just a bland boring objectivity as reading a transcript of court proceedings.

There's just no sign of life in there at all....
