Looks like the "RTE NEWS" DOG has been removed permanently. I think they should just make a semi transparent "RTE NEWS" DOG [text only] and put it where the RTE1 / RTE2 logo usually is.

They're still using it though. It was suggested by someone on this thread I think that the current DOG position leaves room for a ticker to slot in, a fact RTÉ took advantage of during the Road Safety Special.
RTÉ incompetence has moved up a notch this evening. Earlier today David Ervine, the Unionist politician, sadly suffered a heart attack. At the beginning of the 9 news, RTÉ announced that he had died. They had an obituary report and Tommie Gorman on the phone giving his reaction to news that had it been true would have been quite sad. However, this turned to farce 20 minutes later when they backtracked and reported that he hadn't actually died and that they were unable to comment on his condition. Were it not so serious it would be laughable.
Coming up next on RTE News ....a round-up of the day's stabbings, some bloke in a suit doing an incomprehensible stand-up outside Leinster House and a gurning biffo saying " Why isn't the Government doing more ? " about something or other.
And in Sport ...horse-racing,horse-racing and more horse-racing.
Join me - some old bird the wrong side of 40 - after the break.
Oh ... and by the way ... a political leader has just died,no he hasn't,well we're not sure but here's his lashed-together obit anyway.

I don't think RTE can be blamed entirely on this count.
Slugger O Toole , a well informed blog on the NI political scene also had that he had died and at one poster there said he had heard it through another source close to the family
So for some strange reason there seemed to be confusion about his condition

I'm not aware of any broadcaster in Northern Ireland having reported him as dead, so the situation can't have been all that confusing.

Slugger O'Toole - a 'well informed' blog.
RTE - a 'respected' state broadcaster.
Sorry, I don't buy any excuse that there was confusion about David Ervine's condition. It surely doesnt take too much effort to find out the facts. And for god sake, dont report that somebody has died until you are 200% sure that is the case. And don't get your information from a 'well informed' blog.
I can just imagine it: "And Slugger O'Toole has just confirmed that the PUP leader has died . . ."
Shocking incompetence. Glad to see they've at least taken the 'watch the entire show' option from the website, just leaving individual reports and cutting out all the lies!
No one in NI reported his death, infact as of a check 5 minutes ago he's still critical.
I'm still baffled as to how RTE could have made such a cock up, not only that but to have the reporter outside the hospital in vision reporting his death was even more shocking.
And of course, if you know what your doing, you can watch the entire bulletin again. I would upload the edited smil file but don't have the ability at the moment!

Tommie O Gorman explained what happened on Morning Ireland
He was told by 2 reliable sources that David Ervine had died.He rang the Hospital but at that time they didn't confirm either way but would when the doctors answered their pager .He took the decision that since the sources were reliable to go with the story.
He didn't pick it up off that blog.He took a decision that as a experienced journalist that the information was correct and in this case was wrong
