As ever, ITV News fails at times of National significance .

You are joking, surely? There is nothing significant about this story for the nation, unless you happen to be of a 'medieval forelock-tugging serf mentality'.

I would hardly call it UK-Centric. He is 2nd in line to be the head of state of Canada, Australia etc. And Royal Weddings attract huge global interest for the novelty/curiosity value.

I'd be very surprised if he ever became pseudo-Head of State of Canada or Australia. I think they've got more sense.

(and frankly undeveloping) story?

Exactly why I don't understand there is such extensive coverage. Yes, it is a very big story but other than the fact they're getting married, there is nothing else to be said. The story isn't going to develop.

I agree, but unfortunately this is one of those self-perpetuating media events. The UK rolling news channels are already wheeling out every sychophant and 'expert' they can lay their hands on, to spew forth meaningless drivel which can be repeated every hour.

Fortunately we now have access to international news channels, so this sort of blanket coverage can be avoided.

Who's "we"? Have you got a turd in your pocket?

Rolling news isn't for watching all the live-long day. I dipped into the story (and out again) after 30 mins at lunchtime - one sycophant, one set of goodwill messages read out. No harm done and all very nice.

If you want to watch telly all day try the Discovery channel.

Never thought we'll have a discussion on what bride gowns are in during the first 10 minutes of a BBC News bulletin. Laughing

Talking to some people who happened to meet Prince Charles (I believe) and have no knew information about the story. Why?

And not learn anything new.

Just finished downloading podcast of 1st hour of NBC News' Today show - obviously falling over themselves (using same fanfare as ABC's Good Morning America). Later on this week, the Nightly News have an "exclusive" interview with Prince Charles by Brian Williams, so no doubt their ratings will be high.

The Today show had reported several months ago, that the British bookmakers had said all bets were off with regard to whether Wills & Kate would marry, and speculation was now on the date - had not seen those reports on British TV, though.

Is it coincidence that the announcement was timed so that the U.S. broadcasters would pick it up on their morning programmes?

Tom Bradby has secured the first interview according to the Guardian. It will be broadcast this afternoon.

My goodness. Any other ITN journalist, yes, but.... Tom Bradby?! Yikes. Isn't Tim Ewart supposed to be ITV's Royal Correspondent?

Also noteworthy that Mark Austin is presenting the ITV News at 1:30.

Well lik the Sun said

They will also give their first interview together to ITV News's political editor Tom Bradby, an old friend of the Prince, which will be broadcast at 7pm.

I seem to remember that with the phone hacking thing invloving William and Tom Bradby that TB seemed to be the "Most friends" with William out of all the jounalists.

Also according to the EPG
" Tom Bradby conducts the only interview with Price William and Kate Midleton on the day their engagment is announced"

Whereas the BBC2 special I don't think has a interview - is more of a documentary type show. ITV got a bit of a scoop there!

I presume that the "William and Kate: The Royal Engagement" programme was supposed to run at the same time as the BBC2 programme (7:30pm). Interesting that ITV have now moved it to 7pm. Avoids the predictability of the BBC beating ITV in the ratings, but certainly will be interesting to see how the programmes perform against each other considering that ITV has secured the only interview...

And in addition to ITV's special programme at 7pm, there will be a specially-extended News at Ten this evening (1 hour).
