So, apparently ITV have picked Julie Etchingham and Philip Schofield for their coverage.

I heard Gordon the Gopher will be in Kate Middleton's home town.

They should have went for either a newsy approach or an entertainment slant, not both. With BBC and Sky doing the news slant, perhaps ITV should have opted for someone like Ruth Langsford or Lorraine Kelly instead of Julie.

Phillip Schofield, will front ITV’s coverage of the Royal wedding, it has emerged.
The Dancing on Ice presenter will go head to head with Huw Edwards, who is the BBC’s anchor for Prince William and Kate Middleton’s marriage.
Schofield, 49, will team up with News At Ten presenter Julie Etchingham for the day’s programming.
The pair, who will be based at Buckingham Palace, are likely to offer a less formal approach than the BBC, which recently selected Edwards, who presents the Ten O’Clock News, ahead of David Dimbleby.
Most of the BBC’s best-known news presenters such as Fiona Bruce, Sophie Raworth and George Alagiah are also expected to be part of its line-up.
ITV News presenters Mark Austin, Alastair Stewart and Mary Nightingale will be presenting and reporting from along the wedding route, while James Mates has been chosen to describe events from the ceremony at Westminster Abbey, it is understood.
ITV is hoping on Schofield’s popularity on shows such as This Morning and Dancing On Ice will lure viewers away from the BBC, to which most viewers traditionally turn for state occasions.
But the inclusion of Miss Etchingham, who also presents current affairs show Tonight, will counter claims that it is not treating the wedding as a serious news event.
An ITV insider said: ‘Phillip has got terrific experience on live TV and he is also a firm favourite with viewers.’
ITV did not confirm the line-up but said details of its coverage would be revealed in due course.

That just makes Philips inclusion even more bizarre. He isn't really a big name that can draw in viewers, he's just well known name. He's got no news or journalistic experience so he's going to stick out like a sore thumb and its going to cheapen ITV's coverage, assuming they use the ITV News banner.

Hah, just when you thought ITV couldn't get any worse...
I don't like how it'll basically be ITN faces and (presumably) ITN produced but with Phillip Schofield plonked in the middle of it all. (Or does anyone know if this wedding coverage is going to be an ITV Studios production?) As said above he's obviously meant to be some kind of device to give ITV's coverage more attention/ratings but I doubt it'll work well! Would have been better if they had just left ITV News to it.
I hope they don't use it if Schofield is going to be involved... won't help add any (needed) credibility to ITV News' reputation...
Does anyone have the viewing figures (BBC/ITV/Sky) for the 2005 royal wedding? Would be interesting to see.

It's an understandable decision really from ITV - they're going to get thrashed whatever they do anyway as always happens in a head to head with the BBC - and lets face it, the coverage (on all channels in fact) will be more about the trivialities of the day than any historical significance.
I'm not sure though Schofield is the right choice - if they're going for someone outside news Alan Titchmarsh is probably the most appropriate option ITV have. Wonder too whether Tom Bradby is favoured enough by the Royals to get an invite. Then again now he is no longer Royal Correspondent he's probably not as crucial to the coverage as he might have been previously
BTW, what time is the wedding? I assumed if it was in the afternoon they'd be a This Morning building up to it anyway.

To be honest I think more appropriate presenters than Schofield could have been asked. In any case, it'll look silly having him being surrounded by "hard nosed news format people" from ITN in the shape of Alastair Stewart, Julie Etchingham, etc! Here's hoping Vernon Kay and Ant and Dec don't form part of ITV's coverage. (Hope they don't get ideas now I've written that.)
Presumably the programme will last for hours and will have a light hearted magazine format linking between various OBs, that Schofield would probably suit.
I'm not sure what hard nosed news format people were expecting, it is afterall a wedding!

That's true but maybe they should have just chosen entertainment slant or news slant, not both. But to sit in the middle, they could have got away with using Daybreak presenters rather than just seemingly picking names out of a hat.
It'll be on in daytime anyway so using regular daytime presenters could have probably at least kept the regular ITV audience with ITV for the afternoon.
