Must be a good decade or so since ITV ditched Dimbleby.
There was a Sunday political show with Andrew Rawnsley and Andrea Catherwood at one point as well - probably ITV's last attempt at a Sunday politics show
That was The Sunday Supplement, that lasted about a year before it was binned off. What didn't help was that it constantly got moved in the schedules, one week it was on at 1pm, the next week it was something stupid 11.15am.
It was during the period when ITV had the F1 wasn't it, so it constantly moved around.
Even with a fixed slot, you've got the problem of having to avoid the BBC political shows, Marr and Sunday Politics. Even if you avoid them, does anyone want to watch another politics programme, probably only people really into politics which probably doesn't amount to a commercially viable quantity.
Regarding Peston in general, he isn't going to get anything more exciting or meaty to report than he's been reporting in the last 10 years, so he either carries on in the same role or goes for a new challenge.
Although I understand why ITV want him from a public point of view he's not known for his political reporting, he's known as the guy that broke the Northern Rock story and that's a problem if they expect his Sunday morning show to go anywhere. My prediction is that the Sunday show will last one, maybe two series and then it'll be axed quietly and he'll leave to do something else, probably back in newspapers.
As political editor there's no comparison between him and Laura K, she's much more of an all rounder than he is.
I think a political show has the potential to work. The typical ITV viewer probably doesn't engage in politics, and Peston is known for making things more understandable. If scheduled in the right slot, promoted properly and is also entertaining as well as informative, then I don't see why it can't work.
However, I do think an early evening/late afternoon slot would be better. I think a 4pm slot would be best, against PoV and Songs of Praise.

What possessed Andrea Catherwood to leave ITN?! Surely, she must have known that presenting The Sunday Edition wouldn't be a secure job, given that ITV had been in the process of reducing its amount of public service broadcasting over the previous few years.
The Sunday Edition was produced by ITN. It might come as a surprise to many to learn that it was produced in a redressed Channel 4 News studio (Studio 6 at Gray's Inn Road).
It still surprises me that people take Sky News seriously as a mainstream news source, it's an outlet which in no way can be compared with any News/ CA broadcast on the General Entertainment services, to use a Freeview genre description. At 10am on a Sunday, any offering on ITV, BBC or CH4 is going to succeed in gaining more viewers than a programme on Sky News especially with a marquee presenter.
This new offering will suffer greatly if it's over commercialised. ITV would be firmly advised to break sparingly. I'd love to see it given a long run-time too, 75-90mins would seem right.
I look back to Weekend World fondly. It's sheer length and variety would be welcomed, however the resources within ITV News / ITV to recreate such a monster of an authoritative programme in 2015 has to be doubted.
