Very sad news this morning people. The wonderful Brian Hanrahan has passed away, very moving watching the News Channel.

Thoughts to all at the BBC and of course his family.

RIP Brian Hanrahan

Just watching the News Channel right now, I'm quite shocked by the news that's just broken, but saddened. A wonderful journalist

Very sad.

When a presenter introduced a Brian Hanrahan package, you always knew that whatever the story you would be getting something well-crafted, authoritative and immaculately written.

One of Chris Morris' comic creations for The Day Today was Peter O'Hanra-Hanrahan.

I'm sure he wasn't based on the late Brian.

Very sad news indeed. Brian occassionally used to turn up on World as relief newscaster. He was very good at what he did.

Interesting discussion between Sophie Long and the DG Mark Thompson about the experience that Hanrahan had passed onto her and fellow younger journalists. Sophie presented a couple of weekend shifts with him in her early days on the News Channel.

Hanrahan was an excellent journalist and will be sadly missed.

Very sad news. His Falklands reports were iconic

I know he didnt do many News Channel shifts, but I thought he made a good anchor. Shame he didn't do more

I was really saddened when I heard of Brian's death this morning. Like James, I too enjoyed his relief presenting shifts on BBC World over the years. As a tribute, I've uploaded a couple I recorded to YouTube:

That was a nice report shown now on The Hub (BBC World) as a tribute to Brian. All his classic and memorable moments were shown. Nik Gowing was visibly moved at the return.

Some nice tributes posted on Twitter as well by several of his BBC colleagues.

Until watching today's re-visit, I had actually forgotten that Brian covered the falling of the wall.
