It's not uncommon for regions to have problems with providing breakfast bulletins, and the "standard" protocol for regions is to just take the "sustaining feed" (a.ka put BBC London up) to fill time.

In this case, why did BBC One Scotland decides to continue to opt out and find a CA to read the news rather than putting BBC London on air just like how other regions handle these situations? My assumption is probably the editors decided the content from BBC London is too irrelevant for Scotland, hence they just decide to ask a CA to fill time.

IIRC during the 2008 Olympics (or some similar event) Breakfast moved to BBC2, which prevented many of the opts. On that occasion TC7 did a paper review to fill the time, but it has never been standard.

Presumably on the occasion Ballyboy mentions London developed a problem too close to an opt to get a feed from an alternative region (usually Southampton) so they ad-libbed a paper review to fill the time.

Yes, though I think Tunbridge Wells is now the first choice (with notice) if London can't provide the bulletin ?

I suspect part of the procedure is to tell the replacement region NOT to opt, but stay on network, to avoid any comedy howl-round ?

Certainly a few years ago London output is not in the sustaining feed
.... it is opted out like any other region ....

Yes, but I think it's always been an 'OS Insert' during Breakfast hasn't it ?

Even at Breakfast? London appears on the News Channel during these opts via the Salford gallery.

The procedure for regions and nations will differ - different scales.

Regions and Nations are different. If a region can't put out a news bulletin it can't do anything else, usually*.

Nations have a separate presentation operation so have more options, and a sound only headline read is more useful than London news to their audience.

One thing did confuse me - I think Tony Currie has said that alarms go off if they stay on a still image for too long. I guess finding something animating (other than the breakdown caption) would be too difficult?

EDIT: with a bit of notice they can often arrange a feed from a neighbouring region, if they have an issue that means they can't put out their own bulletin but can take that feed, eg presenter overslept, video server or studio lighting failed etc

Could Scotland just have not opted and one of the breakfast presenters could’ve read the headlines for Scotland?

No technical reason why with a bit of notice, although it would have also gone out on the News Channel. And would probably have had an awkward gap at the end because they would be reading the same script that the announcer did. I'm not sure what benefit that would have had.

Why would it have gone out on the news channel? The News Channel takes the London opt during breakfast and that was broadcast as scheduled.

Some of these suggestions are like when there was that transmission issue with Panorama the other week, people coming up with elaborate plans of nations taking other nations and all kinds of stuff.

Might be possible in theory but not at 6:20am with 5 mins to the opt

I believe Ben Thompson missed Business Live at least once after oversleeping.
