Well I'm afraid we'll have to agree to disagree, because I find it incredibly bland and unchallenging. It reminds me of a cheaply put together, local evening version of BBC Breakfast, which would be fine for a very small region down south, but not good enough for an alleged national news programme.

Agree with you on the sub-opts though. I don't quite understand how STV can afford it with no public funding but the BBC can't.

Maybe we should both drop them a line?

Anyone know if they've passed the 40th birthday mark yet? And were there any " celebrations "?

( That's RS, not any of the presenters! )

yes and it was its 50th! last year.

I wasn't meaning news in / from Scotland, I was referring to specifically the 40th birthday of Reporting Scotland. It started in 1968...

Last year the BBC pulled out all the stops to mark 50 years of television news in Scotland... so celebrating 40 years of Rep Scot a mere seven months later might have looked a little indulgent. Not everyone's as bothered by anniversaries as we are!

The name Reporting Scotland may go back to 1968 - but to all intents and purposes it grew out of the programmes which came before like A Quick Look Round. And - strictly speaking - Reporting Scotland hasn't run for 40 years. The name was dropped during the 60 Minutes era in 1983-84.

I just meant a mention or feature in RS itself. I do remember that the for a while it was " Scotland Sixty Minutes ".
Before TV Ark was " updated " they had pictures which were from the 30th anniversary feature shown on RS.

There's a school of thought within the BBC which would argue that it's now time to drop the name Reporting Scotland - and simply use a generic title like BBC News Scotland. I can't stress enough there's no current plan to do this so please don't get worked up about it!! Smile

However it is easy to see how the name could easily be faded out - if not dropped - without making any big changes to the programme. Just change the astons to "BBC NEWS" and change the pay-offs from reporters.

It's like the argument over whether to use the name Grandstand or BBC Sport.

There was a documentary about Reporting Scotland (including its previous incarnation) last year on BBC Scotland. A video was available on the BBC Scotland part of the website. I had a glance at the site last night, but it wasn't immediately obvious where it was - so perhaps you'll have more luck looking.

Very interesting. Lots of footage of the Marquis years, an interview with Michael Buerk (who was drafted in as a reporter for Scotland as well as a Scottish correspondent for the network during the oil boom in the 70s), as well as some fascinating stories about the slow process of bringing colour telly to Scotland, and the fall-outs with London over the years.

So the short answer is yes, there is more than just a report for you to watch - you just need to find it!

That was sudden. So, the programme is going down to one presenter - does this mean that Jackie Bird and Sally Magnusson will share the role, or will someone new be brought in as well?

Well I would really like some breath of fresh air brought into the presenting side of Reporting Scotland. I like both Jackie and Sally, but Reporting Scotland needs some new younger faces to front the programme.

Oh do not get me wrong 623058 - I agree with your thoughts on better stories - but as far as I am concerned the set matches the uniform sets of all other BBC News programmes. IMO the set looks good.

However, I think it would just be nice to see a fresh face fronting the programme. I think that may give it a boost and rejuvenated theme.

If they really wanted to save money they should just have one presenter such as Jackie Bird and a deputy who may be groomed to become the main anchor - perhaps Glenn Campbell. That is just my opinion.
