BTW top story tonight - Rangers!
So? The biggest football match in Scottish history for years, course it was the top story. Even more significant than previous finals where a British team have been involved as it is being held in Manchester.

Fair enough if a Rangers / Celtic story was the top story for the first time, but frequently football dominates a half hour news programme representing a whole nation. And there is more to life than football for some...

Yes, but such events are to even those who are not football fans, important - for Scottish pride, culture AND sport.

Just a thought Wink

I am with Andrew on this one........would RS give the same coverage if it were Dundee United or Aberdeen in the final???

This is a disgrace......BBC Weegie!!!!

Are Dundee United or Aberdeen as successful as Celtic or Rangers. Are they supported more?

No... Rolling Eyes

I do agree though, that the coverage is a little OTT.

Will Dundee United or Aberdeen get t such a final? Razz

True Barn, but lets be honest: Rangers have a huge fanbase. And Dundee United don't. So nobody outisde the DU fanbase (it could be argued) would perhaps find it newsworthy? Whereas even some the Rangers fanbase is so big in Scotland that it IS newsworthy.

Hey its not - you are right!!

If you were to look you will see that my comments were about the fact that a massive part of Scotlands news programe (a show that thumps home that they ae our National News) was given over to half a citys football team......BBC Rangers!! I also mentioned that it was a shame (for Scotland) that we then see some of the support for that team smash the host citys centre up.......no wonder Manchester wanted them to stay away!!!

OK, I think you'll find that both North Tonight & Scotland Today gave just as much over the top coverage as BBC Scotland, and Rangers aren't even a team from NT's coverage area!

Secondly, I'm not a Rangers fan, but on the BBC website, a Greater Manchester Police spokesman had this to say "The vast majority of supporters have behaved impeccably" - so I think your comments are a little one-sided.

No I agree....what was NT thinking of???

You also right re the majority of the fans.........I was watching BBC Breakfast at 8am on the morning of the match...they were live in Manchester and the ammount of Rangers fans drinking at that time of the morning.....a nice reflection of Scotland for the UK???

Scots fans have had an excellent reputation at away games for the best part of a decade and a half. A reputation that is starkly different to the one held by English fans abroad.

A cynical part of me believes the English are reporting these troubles with relish; and while I would never condone violence, one can understand how it might have been provoked by the failure of a big screen.

Utter TOSH!!

Come on.....did you see the CCTV pictures on REPORTING SCOTLAND (not English TV)??

I rather think it might be the fact that alcohol from breakfast time through to final whistle was the problem.

I can't see why you would want to stand in a square in Manchester anyway......only those with tickets to the game should have been there!

It seemed everybody was trying to jump onto the Rangers game bandwagon coverage-wise - I'm not a football follower, and I couldn't escape the report which was top story over a murder on the late news on Granada!

Probably because the game was in Manchester, but I think it had much too much exposure.

I disagree, it was the UEFA Cup Final. It always gets heavy coverage. Why it was hosted in Manchester and not in Scotland or Russia beats me, but I guess that was a decision taken by the organizers.
