The studio itself is not tiny - it's the problem that the news set shares with the sport set, so news only have half the studio.

So to be more accurate - the area of the studio news are using is tiny...

Presumably they aren't able to have a more flexible studio that could be fully utilised by both programme areas for either artistic reasons (they want them to look more different than they think could be achieved in the same area) - or a cost thing, in that they don't have the staffing to turn round studios and have found it cheaper to have two permanent standing sets?

(Though one could argue that having two permanent sets in the same studio, is wasting half a studio for both shows, and poor value for money, if you wanted to take that tack)

From previous pictures it looks like the Sportscene set was transported to PQ from QMD. And, IIRC the desk for the news set was also taken from QMD. My guess is that it's a cost-saver because you would probably find it is easier to only use a small set for sports which will only be used (usually) about 2 times a week than it is to key in all the images and light up a 'big' news set.

It would have made more sense to create almost an exact clone of the national studio, with the high-quality Barco projectors, and use it for the Sports, Newsnight and the news, much how TC7 is used by 4 or 5 different shows.

I suspect the turnaround from the 2225 bulletin on BBC One in the Ten O'Clock News, followed by the 2300 Newsnight Scotland opt is deemed to be too tight for the same studio to be used for both, especially if a set-tweak and lighting-tweak were required.

The Newsnight studio currently supports Working Lunch, Hardtalk and Newsnight in one day - and each have just about a reasonable turnaround currently, allowing for lighting tweaks, sofa changes, desk alteration etc.

That said - the new BBC One sports set is projector based - using high quality HDTV projectors, different technology to the Barco system News use, but achieving similar results (without such obvious seams) - so the concept of projector based sets is well and truly established for both network news and network sport.

What is the turnaround time between Sport and News on BBC One Scotland at the weekend (would they be able to share a set with re-setting time) - or are weekend bulletins likely to use the small presentation studio anyway?

Weekend bulletins will use the main set, but it's a very tight turnaround from Sport (only the length of the national bulletin).

Yep - that re-inforces the requirement for two sets rather than one, as there would be no time to re-set and re-light between shows, but there would just be time to spin cameras. (As used to be the case when the Six O'Clock News and UK Today shared the same studio in London and used to broadcast back to back - with the Six followed by UK Today followed by the National End headlines all in the same studio)

Mmm - I am in shock at posting this - but I really enjoyed Reporting Scotland tonight.

While I much prefer Jackie to Mr Robertson - his pairing with Abeere McIntyre was really good tonight. They seem to have an okay on screen chemistry. She has always been my second favourite presenter in the current line up.

Andrew Kerr is pretty cute as you say - but he is no match for John 'Stud Muffin' Mackay - phwoarr - I still see him now and again through Sky!

On a completely different note - is Jackie now doing Monday programmes with David and is Sally off on her hols or has she been 'Anne MacKenzied'?
