Why can't they do it in the real set? It can't be too hard, as it would be fired up and ready for Newsnight Scotland, and isn't it just a matter of changing the gels and screens?
I think it is a bit more complex than that unfortunately.
There is a lot to do in preparation of the 11pm live broadcast. I have asked this myself and was told it would be a nightmare to work around.
I do not like that set though. That red backdrop is really embarrassing!!!

Newnight Scotland are doing their "what's coming up" bit during the beginning headlines of the main newsnight programme whilst the Reporting Scotland late bulletin is on so not possible. Plus, I suppose it uses less crew to broadcast from that simple desk with one camera angle.
What would have prompted that? I've never seen things go so badly wrong before on BBC Scotland that it's been required. Is it a TV equivalent of a radio emergency tape, or was there simply nothing on the clean feed?
What the flip was that BBC logo - it looked like one of the generic ones set aside for an imminent "BBC Television from London" announcement.
I know the new set was bad, but it's not
that
bad.
I'll give continuity one thing - that was a cool as hell announcement bearing in mind he had a lot of time to fill.
I like the lunchtime/6pm one, but seriously, that 10pm thing screams cheap.
Well now that they have ditched Anne and her 'expensive' hotel fees - I would have hoped that an IKEA backdrop would not be used. Is this imagination at the BBC?
Perhaps the backdrop is sponsored by the Daily Record now
Re. new titles - believe it or not BBC Scotland actually commissioned new titles and a new theme but London told them NOT to go ahead with it and instead continue using the old one. Apparently, they will be GIVEN a new theme and graphics in the new year as part of a national roll out. Talk about three line whip! Alex Salmond would have a field day if he found this out!!!

Im sure he has more pressing issues to deal with like running the country. However it does seem an awful waste of license fee payers money to commission (and knowing BBC Scot it'll have cost a fortune) new titles and a new theme then not get to use them. You'd think London would have told them before hand that they shouldn't waste their time!

Mr Salmond should bite his tongue if he does indeed become so incensed upon discovering this news. BBC Scotland is merely a division of a national broadcaster; it does not deserve special consideration just because it's standing in Mr Salmond's playground.
From what has been said, it appears that BBC management has made a decision to effectively relaunch its regional news branding in one unified move; this isn't a controversial move - large organisations often make decisions centrally.
If Mr Salmond wants BBC Scotland to be able to make entirely unilateral decisions for itself with no involvement or interference from London, then he should set up the Scottish Broadcasting Corporation - funded entirely by Scottish licence fees, and with no subsidy or payment from the other countries in the union.
But that would be a nonsensical move, and one that would likely be justified with the assertion that Scotland is best at deciding what's in the Scottish interest, rather than London. But that argument tends to conveniently end there when it is put forward, when in fact it could be extended further - for example, surely an Aberdonian assembly is better placed to decide on what is best for Aberdeen than a national government based in Edinburgh? I can't see Mr Salmond deciding to argue that point with much enthusiasm though.
So just as there must be some elements of centralised management of affairs for government (with some decisions made on a local or regional level, and some made by national government), the BBC as a national broadcaster with regional and local departments must also be allowed to make decisions nationally without everyone getting their tits in a twist.
Yes, from a presentation enthusiast's viewpoint, it is disappointing not to see the Scottish-commissioned titles and graphics, but until the day that the BBC's Scotland division becomes the standalone SBC entity, the
British
Broadcasting Corporation will have every right to make decisions in its broader, national interests, even if some of its departments and divisions do not always agree with them.
BBC Scotland is a little bit more then a simple division of the BBC. it is the only network with a full licence reach, it's given ample autonomy and if the SNP have that referendum on independence then there will be an SBC
