*SARCASM* RTE's backdrop is crap.

Yeah, so is their production. We admit it. See http://rtenews.blogspot.com.

And you'll all be able to point and laugh if the new RTE International channel is broadcast in the UK on Freeview, which the Irish government are considering. I guess they care more about the UK than their own country.

Sadly, I don't think we'll get a Scottish Six now. I wonder if they will look at devolving segments of the programme though?

I've often wondered about that possibility too.

There's often at least one story during "the Six" (typically in the latter half of the programme) that concerns, say, a piece of political legislation that's being proposed for England & Wales .

If something was only applicable to Scotland and/or Northern Ireland, it would only ever be on their respective regional news, right? So, I imagine that Scots and NI viewers must be sick-to-the-back-teeth of the England-biased "national" news giving such prominence to stories that don't apply to all parts of the UK.

Clearly, therefore, there really is a case for a Scotland (also NI?) opt-out. Even if it's only, say, 18:15-18:25 or something. Anything that covers up the irrelevent "England & Wales" kind of stories would surely be a good thing? Idea

Sorry WOA - I meant devolving Reporting Scotland.

Devolving? I'm a little confused, all editorial and production control is held in Glasgow for Reporting Scotland Confused Smile

Is that carpet on the inside of the baking tray?

Hmmm, it could be...

...there's certainly a hint of those dark and light "patches" that occur when a carpet's been vacuum-cleaned in different directions. However, a grey/silver carpet seems unlikely to me. It's more likely that whatever smooth-surfaced material the "baking tray" is made from (plastic of some description??) is a bit scuffed etc. Carpet or not? - it'll be the same as whatever the network news has, I'd imagine.

perhaps it is carpet because they have swivvel chairs with castors that would make a rather annoying noise on a hard floor.

Must be very frustrating to have to look at a screen for the weather seeing as she is just off-shot on the left... Rolling Eyes

Hi Hermes,

Please let me expand a bit more on my thoughts.

I was thinking that with stv having opt out segments for North Scotland, Tayside, West and then East Scotland - perhaps BBC Scotland may consider devolving the programme into different regions such as north, east and west? Perhaps there may be editorial and production atonomy for Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow? Or even add Inverness and Dumfries into the equation??

This would be as well as the main team in Glasgow for the main part of the programme. Wink

There are six planned sub regions for tv news in BBC Scotland, which would feed material into the main programme, and be on a red-button / broadband service. I don't know if there were plans for specific local opt outs during the main programme because of transmission costs. However, nothing more will happen until the West Midlands trial has been fully judged and local tv has had a public value test by the BBC Trust. Unfortunately, according to press reports, Local TV could derailed by than the lower than desired (by BBC management) licence fee settlement.

The move is taking place between April and July (there's a lot to move!). I'd suggest you keep your eyes peeled at the beginning of July Wink

A thousand staff members, two national radio stations, two television networks, all of which will be using new technology and can't have interruptions to programming. It's probably the largest move in recent BBC's history (bigger than the Mailbox move), so it won't happen in a couple of weeks.
