Has to be 1999 for me - the original and the best.

Of course, there was technically one more version - remixes were done in 2004 but the opening beds never made it to air. They preferred to keep the 1999 beds until 2007. The 2004 closing bed and Ten promo bed were the only ones to be actually used. It's a pity they didn't use the 2004 opening beds because they segue much better into the 2004 opening titles than the 1999 beds did.

I never knew there was a new one made in 2004. Is it around anywhere to download?

2008 was my least favourite. Along with everything else with that relaunch, it was like they were trying to recreate the great 1999 but failed. 2013 was an improvement but is stale now (and with everything going on, it's unlikely a relaunch is on the cards any time soon).

(And just realised this might have been better posted in the Nostalgia thread)

Looking back, I can't believe there's only been 4 headline beds used on the nationals in the last 21 years:
1999-2007
2007-2008
2008-2013
2013-present

The 2007 one was my favourite which meant of course it was the shortest lived. What's been your favourite?

Of course the 1999 one. The beat of the whole 1999 package seemed to be faster than all successors.

I didn’t know that either! Have they ever surfaced? Or can you give us a clue as to how they sounded / why they were ditched?

The 1999 beds didn’t jar with the 2004 titles imo. It was when the 2007 titles launched that they really didn’t go - it took them a couple of months to launch new beds that matched better.

99 had to be the best. The pace was on point, short and snappy, was something new for TV news. The 07 titles just seemed all a bit eary for me especially with the studio that didn't look right. I still don't know why it makes me feel funny but it just does.

In terms of the later music, I actually prefer the 2008 themes to 2013. I didn't really see the point of the changes made in 2013 as they were so slight as to be almost unnoticeable. I'm not quite sure why but 2008 edges it for me. Maybe I prefer the simpler sound rather than the ever so slightly fussier themes used since 2013. But I do agree, it's all very stale now.

See my post above for the unused 2004 opening bed. If you run that into the 2004 titles you can hear how perfectly they go together....and the 1999 bed will now forever jar with them for you!

I'm not 100% sure why they were never used. My guess is something to do with the regions. The old beds were kept for any sequence that usually contained an opt - opening heads and 1/6 halfways. The closing bed was replaced with the new version in 2004, as was the halfway promo during the 10 which didn't have an opt. It just seemed too much of a coincidence for it not to be related to the regions. Like you say, they finally got around to launching completely new beds in 2007.

Thanks for that! I definitely see the similarities with the 2004 closing theme and midway junction on the 10. The start of it also sounds similar to the News 24 headline music introduced in December 2003.

They kind of had an issue with the regions when they introduced the new beds in 2007 (in my region at least) where the music would change ever so slightly when they opted into the regions.

The midway bed in 2007 had some extra beeps - wonder if they always played that at the TOTH too.

It seems that from now on, so the Six gets its rehearsal time, we will get Your Questions Answered every day at 17:45. Which is sad, because the slot used to be occupied by Huw interviewing somebody interesting, but now it's a repeat slot. Sign of the times.
