I think that’s when one of the newspapers had a photo of the Queen on the front and the words “I QUIT AS LEADER” in massive letters above it, making me briefly think she’d abdicated. But the Queen photo was for a different story and the headline was about Major.

Always wondered if my memory’s accurate on that as I’ve never found proof it existed!

Interesting upload on YouTube of the 1995 Conservative Party leadership election. Pre-News 24 days, David Dimbelby presents a News Special with a Prokofiev opening theme. Shots of the Millbank studio and an integrated News at Six too.

There’s some great videos on that account. Something I didn’t realise is they’ve been using the same animation to introduce party political broadcasts since 1999, must be one of the oldest pieces of pres still in use.

The title sequence for that is quite nice, and interesting to see Jon Sopel captioned as John Sopel.

Surely those opening titles should have featured Major and Redwood rushing around London in a panic and getting in and out of people carriers?

And come on-The apprentice theme being used (before it became The Apprentice theme of course!)

I was wondering which studio Dimbleby was using for that programme. As the Six was coming from N2, I can only think that he was in N1, which at the time was for BBC1 daytime bulletins and BBC World.

Was it not from Millbank?

I may be wrong, but I thought all BBC1/2 bulletins came from N2? I'm pretty certain that N1 was exclusively World at that time.

But Dimbleby threw to someone "at Millbank", which had someone sat on the green bench within their newsroom, which later became the original 'Dateline London' set. Did the BBC even have the studio they now use for Politics Live etc at that time?

It was there in 1997/8, I did some work there. Had a knackered old PAL Cox vision mixer I recall?

They may have moved things round a bit but I remember there being the Dateline London/Westminster Live newsroom set AND a smaller green bench set that was used for News 24 DTLs. I'm positive those two sets existed at the same time in about 2001. Whether those were the same two newsroom sets there in 1995, I can't say.
