Yeah, those are all fair points. I don't have a problem with it myself (of course!) but I just got to wondering what an average person might think if they had heard the Owain drumming version only a week or two ago. That's where it's quite hard to gauge!
Does Scotty know about us? I think he'd be at home here.

This might sound like nitpicking but... Is there any reason why is the News at Ten branding missing on Saturday's late bulletins (even though they air exactly at 10pm most of the time)?
Even the Sunday ones have the News at Ten branding. Wouldn't it be more consistent just to keep the Ten on titles 7 days a week?

9 times out of 10 in normal times on a Saturday the late bulletin doesn't have a fixed time. It's usually around 10pm but at something like 10.10pm or 9.50pm. It's only since CV that it's aired at 10pm 7 nights a week.

They still have the "number 10" on the titles during Sundays even when the late bulletin doesn't start at :00 (e.g the late bulletin starting at 10:05 still have "BBC News at 10" on the EPG and the titles).
IMO
no matter
if it's a weekday or weekend, they should just use the generic BBC News titles if the main bulletin does not start at the TOTH (:00) of 1/6/10PM... vice versa, if the main bulletin starts at :00 of 1/6/10PM, then they should use the titles with the numbers (BBC News at XXX) , to maintain consistency. (e.g A lunchtime bulletin on Saturday starting at exactly 1300 should use the BBC News at One titles).

I think it's because the Ten has always been 6 nights a week Sunday-Friday ever since launch in 2000. I'm sure the Sunday Ten used to lead into Panorama?

Yes and that decision really stems from the ITV "News at When" saga.
When it was announced that ITV's News at Ten would be returning in January 2001, ISTR that ITV wouldn't commit to broadcasting it at 10pm every night. The idea was always that it would be flexible to fit around other programmes. This, of course, led to "News at When" criticisms being levelled at ITV.
The BBC had planned to move its Nine O'Clock News to 10pm in 2001 but quickly stole a lead on ITV and beat them to the punch, launching in October 2000 and guaranteeing a 10pm start 6 nights a week. This was surely centred on ITV's lack of commitment to 10pm so that the BBC could appear more consistent and reliable. It was a wise move on the BBC's part - they cashed in on ITV's catastrophic mistake in axing the original News at Ten and ITV have never recovered from this in 20 years. It's really sad - if ITV had stuck by News at Ten in 1999, the late night news landscape now might have been totally different.
It’s a great "what if" question because there would have been no way the BBC would have gone head to head, it would have been seen as a terrible move for a public service broadcaster to do. So that would have left it at 9pm. Imagine going from something like 14m viewers for a Bake Off final, into the news which would have killed the ratings, to then try to rebuild an audience for a 9.30pm show!
Arguably one of the BBC’s best ever decisions, moving it to 10.
