In the most trivial of observations, last night I observed somebody’s name captioned on the news channel with the BBC News logo above rather than below.

More thrilling updates as I get them.

I thought it was if it was the reporter / presenter they got BBC above (bc they *are* BBC) whereas if its someone else they get BBC below.

Nope. All name captions are above the BBC News logo with story captions being below the BBC News logo.

Can someone tell me why the 8pm and 9pm hours on the NC are being branded as Outside Source, when it clearly is not OS? Why play the OS titles at TOTH but then present it just as a standard studio based news hour?

All other hours are generically branded at the moment, what's so special about OS?

Because the brand is also exported to overseas buyers of the programme. It is not made only for broadcast by BBC News and BBC World.

So, BBC World still has an obligation to make the programme for its overseas export clients.

But the programme isn't being made at the moment is it? It's OS in name only.
What would be wrong with branding the 2 hours as 'BBC World News'?

Because the buyers overseas didn’t buy something called BBC World News. They bought a product called Outside Source.

I fully get your point. But this is also a commercial decision by BBC World News.

I imagine they’re doing it because Outside Source it’s billed in the US guides as “BBC World News Outside Source” same with “BBC World News America”. Live with Lucy Hockins’ show has frequently gone out with generic titles but is billed as “BBC World News” so they can get away from it. I believe World News America has only gone out with generic titles during the holidays (if I recall the week before Christmas the show comes from London with the titles but the week between Christmas and New Years it’s generic) when outputs limited and imagine Outside Source will as well.

Outside Source is relatively new to PBS audiences, it apparently became syndicated in January to replace the gap in schedules when CNBC stopped producing Nightly Business Report for PBS stations.

As Outside Source and World News America are dedicated brands in the US on PBS, I’ve noticed on rolling breaking news they will tend to cut away and roll the titles for World News America. There have been rare occasions during World News America on PBS is just flash cut to rolling coverage, where as during Live with Lucy Hockins it’s much more frequent.

Spinning off from this I wonder if the profiles of the BBC journos who have been on BBC World News and the international services (BBC America etc) have been increased?

Katty Kay’s certainly has as shes an MSNBC contributor and pops up on NBC at times. Kim Ghattas has appeared on MSNBC multiple times.

I doubt any would show up on CNN.
