I find it slightly odd that we'll see 'Breakfast' in the BBC Breakfast title cards Reithed tomorrow morning but the 9, 1, 6 and 10 numericals in their respective title cards remain the same. I'm assuming chunky Reith numbers don't look great - or they just didn't want to touch those titles at all.

On the contrary, I think the Serif font would look quite nice in there.

"It is 14:9 safe, but it seems they've slightly miscalculated it so it's currently safer than it needs to be."

That depends on whether you are calculating 14:9 action safe or 14:9 caption safe. 14:9 caption safe is not as wide as action safe to allow for overscan on some screens. The idea behind it being that regardless of the amount of any overscan a screen may introduce, the caption safe area means that ALL captions/graphics will still be visible.

I'm following caption safe as defined in the latest version of the EBU's E95 document, which is the safe area guidelines used by European broadcasters. So I stick with they've miscalculated it, if I was using action safe the gap would be slightly bigger.

The confusion arises from the fact there aren't any proper guidelines for 14:9 safe currently in use, and I can't remember if any were ever drawn up for 1080 HD frames (if there was I can't find it now). The current guides define only 4:3 safe and 16:9 safe for both SD and HD. So it's down to graphics designers to work it out themselves based on the 4:3 safe areas, and these days they're so used to working in HD which uses square pixels and no blanking they often forget/don't know about the peculiarities of 567i SD frames.

This does raise the question as to how many of BBC World News' outlets still use 14:9. All the ones I've come across are now either HD or 16:9 SD. Plus many of the competing world news channels, such as CNN and Sky News are now 16:9 safe. Personally I feel they should have finally moved to 16:9 safe, and on the few remaining 4:3 feeds move from 14:9 to full letterbox.

For BBC World News, I assume they kept the 4:3 (or the 14:9) format either for regions that still uses mostly 4:3 TV sets or to make it compatible with the NTSC standard (like the Philippines), which doesn't make sense since Pay-TV providers can just downscale the channel from HD 1080i to SD 480p, just like what CNN and other entertainment channels had been doing for quite a while now...

By the way, this BBCWN logo looks quite awkward. This was shown during the current affairs shorts before TOTH, and I'm guessing this is how it will look like during the weekends.

This has probably been answered elsewhere but does anyone know whether Breakfast is gaining the flipper tomorrow or will it just be the new clock and Reith lower thirds, in keeping with what we usually see on Breakfast?

Reporting Scotland now seem to be using the other version (V2) of the title music as well.

Breakfast didn't gain the ticker in the switch from TVC to NBH a few years ago - so one would have to assume, it'll just be lower thirds and the clock.

Is Reporting Scotland the only news programme that changes the colour from BBC News red? Wonder what they will do with their 'live' caption as they pushed it right to the left edge of the 16:9 screen in the past?

Interesting that the News at 9 and 5 get show slugs but the 1 didn't today.

Will be interesting to see if the 6 and 10 get them.

So when do we expect BBC Parliament to adopt the new style graphics?
