It’s debatable if the late regional news needs extending, as at the moment the bulletin is the same as the national news just with local place names slotted into the script. They’d do better giving the full extension to the national.

Agreed. That said, I am not sure we need an extension given that sadly the "new" news will be limited if and more likely when schools are closed, shops close etc. There is only so many times we can hear the same thing.

The 5:10 BBC One update was handled pretty oddly on the News channel tonight. Shaun Ley read a story, the report played, it went to the filler and then Clive popped up. Normally there's a mention of BBC One viewers joining the News channel but it didn't happen this time. Would have been slightly better for Clive to start the 5pm hour on NC only, then do the BBC One bulletin and for Shaun to take over after that.

Slightly off-topic but not worth its own thread: my BBC local radio station has been treading water all afternoon with a sport-less sports show. Normally they don't take news bulletins on a Saturday afternoon (as they are doing live football commentary) but today had a 3 minute seemingly national bulletin each hour, read I think by a guy called Mike Powell.

This wasn't Radio 2's bulletin, so I'm assuming it was provided by GNS, the "General News Service" which is essentially the BBC's equivalent of IRN, providing national news content to the local stations.

My question is this: do they produce a bulletin every hour in case a station happens to need it?

Mike Powell is freelance I believe, so often pops up on Radio 2 as well as doing some newsreading for Global.

Hourly national bulletins are there every summer during the football close season provided by a GNS type service, so I wonder like you whether it is always there or brought back for the next few weeks.?

Looks odd but not the first time it's happened.

Mishal finished the BBC One bulletin and then finished off the back half hour on the News channel.
