Just curious as to why Bakewell has been included in North West Today, when, from what I'm aware of, it is covered by East Midlands Today.

My first impressions of Reith on BBC News. It looks absolutely fantastic to date. Afternoon Live was the first programme to see them live for the first time today. The amount of effort done to make them go live has paid off in a huge way. What I like about the new lower thirds is that they appear on the screen very fast. The videos that I have watched from the new breaking graphics & lower thirds to the the regional titles with the new music mix has been a great experience so far. I am a little disappointed to hear that BBC Newsline in NI has not implemented the new Reith graphics yet. It may do so later this evening after the 6 on BBC One NI.

My rating for Reith's live debut today is 8/10. It does look like to be a great job.

You forgot Nick Miller's uttering of the word "blimey" under his breath when he was talking about the goats to Simon. Very Happy

I truly hate the serif font for the main name first line of the lower thirds. It looks terrible.

Should have used the larger font variant BBC Sport use for their 'Reithed' name captions. Far neater, straighter and authoritative.

If you want to be all 'stylish' and use that style of lettering, sod off to The Guardian or over to NRK.

Interesting BBC Scotland decided to Reith-ize the locations.

Quick comment from me:
Why still 4:3 safe.

They're 14:9 safe.

It is 14:9 safe, but it seems they've slightly miscalculated it so it's currently safer than it needs to be.

I've taken one of the HD captures in this thread and scaled it myself to 14:9 in a 4:3 576 (PAL SD) raster. If you use square pixels, so you have a 768x576 image, and then overlay the 4:3 safe area defined in EBU R95, it lines up with new graphics. So it would appear this is what the graphic designers have used.

However, this not how SD video works, it uses non square pixels in a 720x576 frame. That 768x576 image gets squashed in to 702x576, with 9 pixels of blanking either side giving you the final 720x576 frame. The safe area definied in EBU R96 is based on this 720x576 frame, so once the image has been scaled this way the safe areas can then be accurately applied.

Here is that capture I've borrowed, correctly scaled to 720x576, so this is exactly as it would be broadcast, with the R96 caption safe area overlayed in grey. As you can see, there's quite a gap between the edge of the caption safe area and the graphics:

This does raise the question as to how many of BBC World News' outlets still use 14:9. All the ones I've come across are now either HD or 16:9 SD. Plus many of the competing world news channels, such as CNN and Sky News are now 16:9 safe. Personally I feel they should have finally moved to 16:9 safe, and on the few remaining 4:3 feeds move from 14:9 to full letterbox.
