Please do ask him when the next BBC News refresh is, surely due soon. I mean, it's been 7 years.

Has BBC News had a complete all in one refresh (titles, astons and studio all on the same day) since 1999? Possibly the 2004 refresh, but not sure the studio was changed at the same time back then.

Yes. 2008 and 2013.

And 2004 wasn’t all at once. It was in 2003 the studio changed - it would be more than a year until the titles did.

In 2013, BBC World News got the new look in January, BBC News Channel and BBC One changed two months later.

Ah yes so they did. So it’s only ever been 2008, and even then Breakfast didn’t change its titles.

Would discount 2013 anyway as they just moved studios and only tweaked existing elements - it wasn't the full on relaunch it really should have been. The current "look", though with numerous tweaks along the way, has been around 12 years really.

And in both 2004 and 2008 the new graphics came after a year or more in the new studio.

You could even argue the 2008 intro music was a reworked version of the 2007 nationals intro music:

A graphics/title change to BBC News is long overdue - the current set of titles are just crap and dated - I have never liked them - they look cheap and like something created on PowerPoint

The 1999 wasn't an all-in-one refresh? Breakfast didn't change until Autumn 2000; the regions gradually introduced the new look over several months; News 24 changed in October 1999, BBC World got a refresh in April 2000 (although the new look was visible overnights for several months prior).

April 2008 must have been closest to an all-in-one refresh, as BBC One, BBC News and BBC World News all got the stripey globe on the same day, new astons and it was also when both News Channels changed studio.

Not quite. News 24 became News channel and moved from N8 to N6. World News remained in N9 for a few months post the April 2008 refresh to allow them to tweak N8 before World moved there.

All this talk of the days of the News Channel in N6, makes me appreciate the current set up (which is getting stale in itself). What bland and dark times they were!

To be fair, I'd prefer if they were still in N6 with the presenting line-up, scheduling, and news reporting they had back then, rather than how things are now, with loads of cuts being made over the last few years to live output, if I'm being perfectly honest Confused

To be fair at the time there was no generic look for regional news and Breakfast News and the News Channel were not aligned with the main branding either, so in terms of the network news it was a complete refresh.

The last time a complete all-in-one re-branding of the BBC1 bulletins happened was, in fact, way back on 13th April 1993. Everything was brought into alignment from Breakfast News right through to the Nine on the same day. In typical BBC fashion, it had started to unravel by 1997 when Breakfast News went its own way. But that was precipitated by studio swaps that occurred in the summer of 1997 when TC7 started being used for BN, Newsnight, Newsround et al. They obviously wanted a set design that was flexible and could be used for various programmes throughout the day.

As Brekkie says, though, it's hard to judge because back then even BBC World was different, not to mention regional news. BBC World Service Television, as it was then, followed with a re-branding exercise on 24th October 1993 but only borrowed elements from the BBC1 news, e.g. the set design. Everything else was based around the flags motif that wasn't seen by UK viewers at all.

I think it's very hard to argue one way or the other on this one as the parameters have changed over time. The homogenisation of all the various BBC news outlets happened in a very piecemeal way over a long period. If you want to find a date when everything - Nationals, Regional News, BBC News 24 and BBC World - rebranded on the same day, then I'm afraid that's never happened.
