Out of idle curoiosity, what newsgathering strength does BBC News have in the regions?

I'm thinking more of "out of hours" - I'm guessing they've all got reasonable "strength in numbers" during the week etc, but I'm curious as to how much of a skeleton staff they run on overnight and at weekends... or does the BBC just then rely on the main regional centres (such as Bristol, say) being staffed but reporters then being "on call" otherwise?

Bristol and Plymouth are the only 2 I have knowledge of - they are both totally unmanned overnight.

There are always on call reporters/crews. I know from my regional TV days you had to take the duty mobile home with you just to be woken up by someone wanting to know why BBC One was showing something because the answerphone said for urgent calls ring this number.

Ok then, I'll bite Smile

What days/hours are regional newsrooms staffed? And are there different levels of BBC regions? i.e. main centres such as Bristol and Birmingham, and then smaller "local" centres?

the bbc birmingham newsroom is not manned overnight. first people in are the bbc wm early show, midlands breakfast team and a midlands ceefax/online bod.

Surely there's a producer for the WM Breakfast show in overnight?

I've worked in regional radio and telly (BBC) and most early stuff is done the night before with the early team checking for new stuff in the morning... Don't think theres any overnight staff..
