The last episode is pre-recorded because it's being done with an audience as an OB and there are often noise rules etc after a certain time. From a practical point of view it'd also be a pain for the audience as This Week finishes after midnight and they'd be scrambling for the last tube or to get a night bus.

ISTR they used to have to air Big Brother on a half hour delay or something because the timeslot Channel 4/5 aired it in was ended quite late and so they'd have been breaking various rules (again I assume noise, presumably some form of licensing also) if they'd done the whole thing live.

When I went to a BB eviction back in 2009, the live show finished at 10pm and we began recording the eviction at 10.20pm, with it going to air 10.35pm, so 15 minute delay. No idea what Channel 5 did though.

Does anyone know why Andrew Neil was not presenting This Week last night? Was he ill?

Isn't he at the G20 summit?

Andrew is This Week host and if he is not on air, people wonder why. Would be like The Graham Norton Show, and Graham not presenting one week and not being told why. Which we were back in May when Jack Whitehall guest hosted.

But we were told, weren't we?

Like most people it’s not unusual for Andrew take some weeks off in the year.

Yes, but it's very unusual for Andrew to miss TW. In fact, I can't remember it ever happening before.

He has missed a show towards the end of previous series, maybe even the last in the run. I'm sure one year someone else hosted (Eddie Mair?), and Andrew was on as a guest in (I think) New York.

Nick Ferrari certainly presented it once, before he had that stint presenting After the News.

I’m sure there were other guest presenters around that time.

When This Week finishes in July, I doubt the Brexit podcast will gather much of an audience in the same slot. It might do for a week or two, but i don't think it has the staying ability as This Week.

Andrew announced he wanted to leave as host, but the BBC decided to throw the whole lot away just because Andrew was leaving. Watching Simon last night, This Week could have easily continued, in much the same form, with Simon as host.
