As a conservative supporter, I must say I'm glad that MPs chose these two men to battle for the leadership. Both men have the capability of bringing the conservatives back into government again in 2009. They can both see that being leader isn't about getting the tories back into power. It's about removing this terrible labour government from power (and throwing them back into opposition where they belong) and making life better for the citizens of this country.
Problem for the Tories being that everyone remembers the fag-end of the last Tory government was even worse than what we have now.
In any case, Cameron isn't the right man for the job. He's too much like Blair, appears to have no real convictions, isn't too impressive in debates and has a questionable history which shouldn't matter but the Tory party is so full of bigots and reactionaries that at the first sign of trouble, they'll dig up some more dirt and tear the man to pieces.
And the Tories still haven't found an answer for their basic problem; with Blair taking up the space formally occupied with the Tories that most people can tolerate/relate to, the Conservatives need to go further to the right to distance themselves. The electorate is essentially moderate, they won't vote for a bunch of foaming-at-the-mouth extremists, so the Tories are stuffed really unless they can find some way of moving towards the centre without looking just like the Labour Party.
