Neil Miles has just uploaded this clip of Anna Ford reading the original One O'Clock News:-

I never ever thought she or indeed another female newscaster read it during this era.

Wonder if it was a last minute emergency?

Only appearance shown on the genome is Monday 27 August 1990, which I guess will have been a Bank Holiday.

Indeed according to Genome, that edition on 7th November was scheduled to be Phillip Hatton.

Am i correct in saying Jennie Bond was the only female to read the One O'Clock News in the virtual era?

Didn't Jill Dando do it?

Anna Ford presented it at least once in the week of Diana's death. There is a video on YouTube of it, in a compilation of news reports from the week, but out of sync. Reckon Moira might have done it as well.

I wonder did they have the v/o at the start already recorded?

Could have just spliced it from the Six O'Clock voiceovers

Didn't Jill Dando do it?

Pretty confident Jill did not head the one, six or nine in the virtual era.

Moira did a couple of Bank Holiday editions in 1993 which were branded as One o'Clock News. No idea which studio or set those would have been though.

I’ve had a look at genome and most of the 86-93 one o clock news bulletins were either Martyn Lewis, Phillip Hatton, or Michael Buerk, Andrew Harvey, i have seen a few listed for Peter Sissons in 1990, John Humphreys in 1989, Nick Witchell in 1988, Laurie Mayer in 1988, Julia Somerville, and Debbie Thrower in 1987!

Unless I'm very much mistaken (copyright Murray Walker)...

Philip Hayton became the One's chief presenter on 31 October 1988 when the Nine - which Martyn Lewis and Michael Buerk were already presenting more often than not - had its relaunch with the transmitter titles.

And from then until he was moved aside in April '93, he missed very few editions - with his usual deputies being Martyn and Michael, funnily enough.

Presumably all three were unavailable on this afternoon in November '90 - hence Anna stepping in. Of course, Anna would herself become the One's chief presenter nine years later. Wink
