Regarding those sombre titles, my guesswork would be that they've been around for quite a while in preparation for the Pope's death. That sombre music was composed as part of the BBC World News 2000 re-launch package, and has been very rarely used. I noticed the end board of the titles were in Gill Sans, with "Pope John Paul II" in small writing all over the place. I'd hazard a guess that they were made before the 2003 re-launch.

Idea Also note that the News 24 tower covers up part of the 'BBC News Special' text - the titles can't have been designed with the Tower in mind.

With News 24 rolling out the sombre title music, I have a question:

When the Queen dies (for the purposes of this question, assume it's before the next major makeover of the BBC News presentation and music in 2008 Wink), of course when the news initially breaks there will be playing of the national anthem aplenty. But when they come to have the BBC News Special, do you think they'd use the sombre music in the titles, or the National Anthem?

Hmm, I'm not sure about the music (it sounded subtly different to any of the BBC WORLD sombre themes that I've heard, at least), but I'd definitely agree with you on the visual sequence. It looked like it was designed with the same themes as the Iraq War sequences.

Ah, with regards to the music -- I've been watching on BBC World itself, thinking they were taking an exact feed of N24. Maybe they've each played out their own title sequence? The BBC World version was definitely the original 2000 sombre music.

I've got the 2000 sombre music on mp3 and I'm fairly postitive that News 24 used it.

Due to webspace limitations, I can only provide a copy of the audio from the Pope Special Titles along with the World Sombre mp3, but that should be sufficient anyway.

The Pope Special music is from the midnight TOTH on News 24.

EDIT: Oh, bah - 01:07! One minute over my estimate Laughing

I mean the music they used for 9/11 as well.... the "Breakfiller" music on The TV Room's Iraq coverage bit?
