On air, Smith said: "You must prepare for all happenings, all major happenings on the planet and this is one for which we have planned. Im sure the Vatican is dealing with things they could never have thought of just as Im dealing with never having to think of a young producer screaming 'the pope has died, the pope has died.' Our technology, we certainly get ahead of ourselves sometimes."
Not directly relevant to the current course of this conversation -- and maybe this has been mentioned already. But the above quote is what Sheppard Smith of Fox News said to explain Fox's misreporting of the Pope's death.
Apparently some producer had been monitoring a foreign language feed, mistakenly called out that the Pope had died, and this had got to air.
In the heat of the moment, an easy mistake to make. What does Sheppard Smith do? Doesn't blame himself, or even Fox News in general -- but puts it all on the shoulders of that producer. Nasty nasty nasty. Would you ever hear someone from the BBC or ITN or even, for that matter, Sky, do such a thing? Nasty.
With News 24 rolling out the sombre title music, I have a question:
When the Queen dies (for the purposes of this question, assume it's before the next major makeover of the BBC News presentation and music in 2008 ), of course when the news initially breaks there will be playing of the national anthem aplenty. But when they come to have the BBC News Special, do you think they'd use the sombre music in the titles, or the National Anthem?

Regarding those sombre titles, my guesswork would be that they've been around for quite a while in preparation for the Pope's death. That sombre music was composed as part of the BBC World News 2000 re-launch package, and has been very rarely used. I noticed the end board of the titles were in Gill Sans, with "Pope John Paul II" in small writing all over the place. I'd hazard a guess that they were made before the 2003 re-launch.

Hmm, I'm not sure about the music (it sounded subtly different to any of the BBC WORLD sombre themes that I've heard, at least), but I'd definitely agree with you on the visual sequence. It looked like it was designed with the same themes as the Iraq War sequences.
