On another point is Sky still using "POPE DEAD"? Again the person who wrote this appears to lack anything resembling an English qualification, surly a smaller case with "Pope Dies" would have been more in-keeping.

Simple use of something like "Pope John Paul II: 1920-2005" would seem effective and tasteful, and surely not beyond the typing skills of caption writers or attention span of viewers, even those of Fox.

Monday - Tone calls election.

It is being banded about that he could go to see Her Maj on Tuesday instead now, because in addition to proximity of tonight's news, it is also Lord Callaghan's funeral on Monday.

Thursday - Day off.
Friday - Charlie's wedding.

Can't be bad!

I wouldn't bank on the election being called on Monday. I think there is a big service that all the leaders, VIPs etc are invited to for The Pope on Monday here in the UK ... also it would be highly unlikely they'd go into campaign mode between now and the funeral - it could be seen as poor taste. But I suppose we'll find out on Monday. They could leave it as late as next Monday - it would also mean a shorter campaign.

I was amazed that Caroline Quinn confirmed that it was Monday in her piece on News 24 earlier.

I don't think she actually confirmed it though did she? She said it was expected or words to that effect, but never said it was a definite.

It is unlikely to be left as late as next Monday, especially if Tony wants to get some of his current bills passed, that will require a couple of days for negotiations between the 'usual channels'. Plus Blair may want a session of PMQs where the election date is all out in the open, so my bet it probably will be either Monday or Tuesday.

Yes, that's what surprised me. I reckon they thought we wouldn't notice because we were all concentrating on the Pope.

She said that he's got an audience with the Queen in the morning and would be announcing the election in the afternoon.

Before I went out tonight, I happened to set the tape for Outtake TV and the BBC News at 22.10. Since Outtake TV was dropped, I got the whole News Special on tape. Here are the opening and closing sequences:

BBC News Special - Intro
BBC News Special - Close

A few people have asked about what BBC World have been doing. Well, I missed the news actually breaking, but the first I saw was at about 22.20, and they were taking a feed of the BBC News Special on BBC1. When Huw handed back to London, Anya Sitaram came on and continued the rolling coverage from the BBC World newsroom. They keep taking Brian Hanrahan live from BBC News 24 (they've been doing this all day - you can tell by the type of live and location graphic used) and then dipping back to N9 with Anya.

Why do we have "News Reports" now and not "News Flash" ?
