News 24 are always ridiculously behind with breaking news.

It just isn't their strong point, whereas in-depth analysis is the BBC's very strong point.

But they want it to be confirmed, they dont want to suddenly break news which is not true, but im affraid he is dead i would have thought. Reuters or AP still have no word yet, but Sky Italia are saying hes still functioning, this is one massive media mess , and the BBC want to be safe , not

Anyone who is using the title of this thread as a guide to the Pope's health is in for a big shock....... Rolling Eyes

I don't think many people use TV Forum as their main and only source of news! Rolling Eyes

I think that the BBC have given up on trying to be first to break news and this has lead them to become overcautious. However, in this case they should be saying something - if he's not dead yet then it is simply a matter of hours and possibly minutes.

What's to be gained by quoting questionable sources, who've been wrong before, and are likely to have to retract later?

Everyone knows that eventually, all the claims that he's died will come true. Everyone knows that the time is probably only a few hours away. But the only statement that really means anything is the one that comes from the Vatican itself.

A couple of decades ago, that would probably have been true. But over the past 24 hours, we've had numerous updates from the Vatican, in great detail. They've never been so free with information, and I don't think there's any reason to think they'll delay in making a statement when he finally does die.

Im monitoring/watching the news channels at the moment but I don't know why!
We are all (probably) watching knowing what is around the corner and I don't know whether it is a healthy thing to be doing!

As coverage goes it is all a bit boring, repetitive and dull! (I know it can't be anything else - but surely once he dies many hours of continuous coverage will be dedicated to him....)
I got mixed feelings on covering this and its like watching a horse race - when is he going to go and which channel is going to report it first!

[/confused]

I feel that the coverage has been pretty confusing, there are so many different reports which all say different things. We all do know waht will happen, and so do the reporters, but they have to be careful not to talk in the past tense if you know what I mean!

EuroNews has already killed him off 'Pope has died' scrolling across the screen- but then retracted the statement...

I think (and hope) that on this occasion, at least the UK news channels, have enough respect and courtesy not to treat this as a "race". I feel that they are taking their time not to make any mistakes, and that none of them are hankering to make the announcement first. They're not going to say anything until they are 100% certain that the news is true.

Neither Sky nor the BBC will flash with "Pope John Paul II has died" until the Vatican brief both RAI and one of the international news wire organisations.

Only then will programming on network TV be interupted.
