Surely News 24 can cover themselves by saying the same things as the rest of the networks, ie: 'Italian reports say.....'. Perhaps they have, I'm watching Sky News mainly, but it doesn't seem to be on the News 24 straps.

Yes, but the Italian media have already got it wrong several times and statements to the contrary releases by the Vatican (saying he was in a coma, etc.)

Skt Italia are now quoting Vatican sources saying that the Pope's brain and heart is still functioning.

News 24 are always ridiculously behind with breaking news.

It just isn't their strong point, whereas in-depth analysis is the BBC's very strong point.

Quote from Reuters:
Contradictory Italian media reports on Pope health
VATICAN CITY, April 1 (Reuters) - Italian media gave
contradictory reports about Pope John Paul's vital signs on
Friday, first saying his heart and brain activity had stopped
and then reporting this was not true.
There was no official comment from the Vatican.
The first reports, picked up by the state broadcaster RAI,
said his electrocardiogram had gone flat. The ADNkronos news
agency said monitoring showed his brain activity had halted.
But Sky Italia television later quoted Vatican sources
saying both his brain and heart were still functioning.

I think that the BBC have given up on trying to be first to break news and this has lead them to become overcautious. However, in this case they should be saying something - if he's not dead yet then it is simply a matter of hours and possibly minutes.

But they want it to be confirmed, they dont want to suddenly break news which is not true, but im affraid he is dead i would have thought. Reuters or AP still have no word yet, but Sky Italia are saying hes still functioning, this is one massive media mess , and the BBC want to be safe , not sorry
