Such events are often known by news outlets before officially announced.... or they have a pretty good idea what is going on.

It's only a matter of time till he passes away and if last rites have been administered then....

Yes, I'd be quite sure Sky wouldn't have stayed double-headed if they didn't have a sniff of an idea of what was going on.

I get the impression from reading la Repubblica's website that it is very serious. I wonder what TG1 will say.

Wasn't the report from TG1 due 15 minutes ago? What did it say?

Sky still double headed, but Kevin Owen has replaced Anjali Rao.

Apparently Rai Tv is saying the Pope's health is progressively getting worse and is surrounded by medical staff. They're now showing stills of his life.

If he were a dog, he would have been put down 5 years ago.

Why are we kinder to animals, than we are to fellow humans?

Well for once I'm impressed - here in Ireland our equivalant of Newsnight was still on air as the story broke.
And with the height of convenience, the country's leading journalist on Catholic & religious affairs just happened to be still kicking around RTÉ from an interview on the programme 10 mins earlier!

They extended the prog by 5 mins or so.
From the start, we had the details correct from this programme and a later news bulletin: the seriousness of the Pope's condition was set down from the beginning, as was the fact that he was not well enough to be brought to hospital and that he was recieving the last rites.

It will be interesting to compare coverage in Ireland where c88% of the population is Catholic, and the UK's coverage.

Jeremy on Newsnight was excellent, as he always is.

The answer to this question is too obvious to even ask but sure what the heck, someone's going to raise it later in the media - are black ties appropriate for newsreaders when the time comes? Or even stations' flagship reporters on location in Rome?

very good question. i get the feeling they wont bother.

i'm not catholic, but as with the queen mother, you're more likely to offend people by not wearing a black tie, than offend people by wearing a black tie.

I don't know if this could be significant but the Vatican website news area has a story that is under embargo and can not be opened without a user name and password.

Watching Sky News coverage of the papal poorliness this morning and one big problem with their graphics was shown up.

They had their SKY NEWS FLASH/BREAKING NEWS banner up during a report (why you need both statements I still don't get) and it was scrolling through various pope news. Then it went back to the studio where the newswall was red and the presenter said, "As you've seen on your screen, we've had some more breaking news..."

I'd seen the news on the screen, but as there was already a breaking news banner up, I hadn't realised this was new breaking news!
