A very rare chance to see Five News in rolling coverage mode at the moment

They've excelled themselves tonight for what is essentially a stripped down news broadcast. Fantastic coverage, good enough to rival the larger broadcasters.

Five News also off-air before the announcement is made. Shame, as for a small news operation, they did a good job of providing rolling coverage during their 1830 time slot

Isn't that because it's the Vatican providing coverage?

They had the best presenter available to them, Emma is a pro, programme was smooth, but ashame they didn't get to announce the new pope on the programme, I guess Polly's update at 7:58 will be when they announce it, I don't think FIVE break into programming anymore.

It wasn't the pictures that meant Five were doing a good job, but an experienced reporter and presenter

Jon Snow is very excited.

EDIT: Channel 4 News haven't had much luck so far. Jon has thrown to Alex Thompson in the studio twice now, and the first time they got about 30 seconds into the report, and the second time Alex had enough time to say 'The Government's plans to crack down on cheap booze have been under the spotlight today, but first the Pope', before going straight back to Jon.

EDIT2: And they've handed back to the studio again. 'Third time lucky'...

Seems a shame that ITV cut off at 7pm initially, thugh then having watched the next half hour on C4 it probably was the right call - given what an anti-climax it is I suspect the wrath of God is preferably to the wrath of Emmerdale fans for ITV.

Thank god for C4 though - at least one channel where you could view events relatively clutter free. The only reason the BBC need lower thirds to explain what is going on is because those same lower thirds are covering far too much of the action!

ITV should never have axed the news channel.

Arguably the banner they put up on screen at one point was bigger than the BBC's one. And on the non-visual clutter, they bounced back and forth from Rome twice, and were unprepared for the Pope speaking... Italian. And Jon Snow went a bit hyper at times. Not exactly an epitome of brilliance.

Pity that the BBC translator didn't recognise the Lord's Prayer or the Hail Mary......!!!
