Indeed, I very much look forward to seeing him again.

yeah that's true fair comment Gavin, it's just a shame he's quit totally.

Perhaps, but I am just perplexed by comments about how great he was, etc etc.
The man is/was fine if you wanted a very straight-laced approached, with no warmth and personality... but that doesn't fit well with the image that News 24 is desperately trying (and mostly failing) to promote.
Fine on Radio 4, or even a national news bulletin, but he didn't fit in well with the approach of the channel. As a result, I maintain that it is no great loss for them.

I don't understand why they want people to warm to the presenters. On a channel where they're hardly ever on the same shift it really wouldn't matter would it?
On Breakfast I can understand that, but that's where we can't warm to presenters. Except when it's Bill/Sian, Simon/Kate, and even Bill/Natasha sometimes.
Not having a dig Tom, (cue Nick) but I feel that if Philip had worked on Sky, you'd have had a different opinion.

No, my opinion is not blighted by the channel I prefer.
There are a fair few dreadful anchors on Sky, though admittedly not as many as on News 24.
Why would they want people to warm to presenters? You're suggesting that the management of news channels would actively encourage their audience to only watch for a brief period, then look elsewhere? I hardly think that's their intention.
Of course they want their audiences to warm to presenters, so that they feel ''engaged'' with what they're watching, and hopefully as a result stay watching for longer. In theory, for the BBC is shouldn't matter (no advertising pressures) but they care about it just as much as Sky.

Isn't that in effect though what rolling news is for? To get the news when you want it - so if you want it for a brief period, you'd get it for a brief period?

I caught a few minutes of Kate & Simon yesterday and the difference was amazing. It was relaxed, friendly and at the same time you knew there were two people there who are good journalists (as opposed to some people on here saying they're only there because of their looks!?).
When Hayton was on it was awkward, cold and unwatchable. He was OK when on his own, and I don't doubt his journalistic credentials in the least, but this is television, and how you deliver the news is just as important as the news you deliver.
And did anyone notice how close Kate & Simon were sitting next to each other!
One other point which was interesting yesterday... I was watching in a Welcome Break service area and when the TOG span off for the weather you could still see it as it had been burned on to the screen from being constantly on N24! There were even four blurs underneath where the clock digits usually are.
