Just caught the BBC News bulletin at 12:40 (BBC1) with Philip Hayton presenting - this makes a change to see him rather than Darren Jordan presenting the weekend bulletins.
Was he filling in for someone is this new (to BBC 1) face a permanent fixture?
Will he also present the bulletin at 7:35??
Nice to see him out of the News 24 studio.
Am I right in thinking that he did used to present some of the main bulletins - I'm sure I've seen him on the 1 before the new corporate look in 1993...
This has happened before on Sunday lunchtimes. He's most probably just filling in for someone -- he'll be on News 24 this afternoon. In fact, since the early evening bulletin is so late today, it may be that one presenter will go in for that and the late evening bulletin, and they asked Philip to do the lunchtime summary.
Regarding Philip presenting on BBC1 before...yes he did. He stopped when the Virtual Era came along in 1993, but before that he'd presented all the main domestic bulletins. He ended up on the One O'clock News for a few years before 1993, when Edward Stourton and John Tusa took over.
Phil used to be solo anchor on the One back in the late 80's/early 90's.
He was also second co-presenter and sometimes lead anchor on the Six, alongside Sue Lawley, Nicholas Witchell and Debbie Thrower.
He was also second co-presenter and rarely lead anchor on the Nine, alongside Julia Somerville, John Humphrys and Debbie Thrower.
He then moved to BBC World, where he anchored BBC World News, and BBC Newsday, alongside Liz Pike and Lyndsey Brancher, and often then The World Today.
And then it was onto BBC News 24 after that.
Prior to taking up a desk based anchor position at BBC News in the 80's, Phil was South Africa correspondent for what seemed like 100 years.
Im sure im correct in saying (and if im not then I will probably be corrected)
Phillip Hayton did todays Afternoon summary because Moira was not in for her usual Breakfast With Frost & Politics Show summaries.
Phil was used as he has a Sunday afternoon news 24 shift so it would make sense to use someone who is already to go on the air rather than bringing someone in just for the summary.
Darren Jordon should be present for the 7.35 bulletin.
Agree with you though, nice to see Phil on mainstream BBC One again

Totally agreed - Hayton is quite excellent, he exudes gravitas whilst not being in the slightest bit pompous.
Likewise with Sissons, although he's kinda more homely . Comes from familiarity if nothing else I suppose.
You want something unoffensive from the news I think.
Decent kind of presenter: Anna Ford, Philip Hayton, Huw Edwards (even though he's welsh), Moira Stewart, Sissons etc
I totally agree with your choice of good presenters, it's a shame that Hayton and Sissons are mostly only seen on News 24 and Moira is only seen very early in the mornings 4 times a week (for a very small amount of time)
I think that these more senior presenters should be seen presenting more watched bulletins - ie. the One, Six and Ten
I'm not too sure about George Aligiah - he's very good on his own but get's rather giddy with Ms Chirpy on Six. The silly banter he induges in - where he almost starts shouting in his efforts to be jovial, undermines his otherwise steady performance.
It's often cringe-inducing on Six it can be that bad.
He's very good though on his own though - other people get him too excited
Certainly Six is a bit less serious alright and ought to be; it's more of a family/dinner time bulletin. I still can't get used to the banter though - there's knack to being friendly without being silly. It's a tricky thing to achieve.
