BREAKING NEWS just on News 24 - The wizard is stepping down from Election coverage. What will they do. I don't really think there is anyone as charasmatic as Snow, perhaps Jeremy Vine???

The end for Dimbleby too? Anyone think he'll be gone by the time of the 2009 election... new leaders of both parties? Time for a change?

What do you mean Peter Snow FINALLY steps down. I think its quite sad news - he's magnificent, all part of the election night. Watch your wording.

Peter Snow is like the centre-piece of election night, he is the only one who seems to be able to explain anything so well, plus he is a brilliant guy with the graphics

Thats really a shame

For heavens sake, it was written with humor. I'm as gutted as you are love. He's been there since before I can remember and I am 32 tomorrow.

So could be a very different line up for the next election!

New PM
New Leader of the Opposition
Possibly a new Lib Dem Leader
New Peter Snow
New David Dimbleby.

My choice would have to be:-

Prime Minister - John Reid (the only likely opposition to Brown)
Opposition - Liam Fox
Lib Dem - Sarah Teather
Andrew Marr
Fiona Bruce

The wording of that statement suggests that the BBC have axed him, rather than him choosing to retire, on the grounds of wanting to ''freshen up'' coverage. From that, I think we can take it that they're going to bin Dimbleby too.

It is a shame, but I suppose it had to happen sooner or later.

Election nights certainly won't be the same again!

I don't think there is anyone instantly suitable to replace him, at least not anyone working at the BBC at the moment. The only person I would nominate is Sky News' Martin Stanford.

Otherwise, they are probably just going to wait for someone to "emerge" in the role. They will probably use the English local and Welsh and Scottish elections in the next few years to do live rehersals to see who deserves the honor of doing it for the next general election.

No doubt that stupid woman Helen Boaden is probably behind this.

And it looks like the other Dimbleby is out of favour at ITV these days, so it could be a whole new election lineup on both 'terrestrial' (for want of a better word) channels.

I don't think David Dimbleby will go, hes still better than anyone else available, when he does go it should be Huw Edwards who takes over, but not for a while yet.
I think we should also remember that there are more elections than the general one, there are the Local Elections and EU ones. And I do believe that Snow does the graphics on Scotland and Wales.
But it is a sad day, I can't think of anyone who is good enough to take over, how about Wogan (joke!)

Sad news. Hope the BBC can find an adequate replacement.
