I found the headlines and intro to main story fantastically written and remember how he delivered it with such meaning. Gave me goosebumps all those hours on.

45 seconds and you're in to the programme. Intro so much better with short concise headlines and a bed that isn't just restarted with each headline.

I must admit, I know he got things wrong, but I did sometimes find Peter Sissons quite endearing on News 24. Like watching an elderly grandparent trying to get used to the latest gadget. I used to love his little quirks at the end of the last story of each half hour. I also used to love the way his watch beeped at the top of each hour.

Dan Walker has paid tribute to him on Twitter and comments on how he used to love working with Peter on News 24 and how he never got his name right when throwing to him. Bless

He was, but he still filled in from time to time well into the late 1990s. He also sometimes filled in on the One and Six as well.

Yes, we mentioned this on another thread recently. He was a semi-regular newsreader from 1989 to 1998.

It's true that other people did indeed do the Nine, but only very occasionally, certainly not the free-for-all we get these days.

Yes, there was something reassuring about the fact you knew who to expect. On the BBC, the Nine would almost always be fronted by Sissons or Buerk and over on ITV, News at Ten would pretty much always be Trevor McDonald. I'm not really overly enamoured with the merry-go-round of presenters we seem to have all over the place on the BBC nowadays. I think ITV are still the best at keeping familiar faces in regular slots.

ITV are keen to keep their presenters separate - you never see Tom or Julie present the Evening News, and you don’t see Mary or Charlene present News at Ten.

Perhaps the BBC should leave Sophie as the dedicated Six Friday/cover and find someone to permanently deputise to Huw now Fiona is in Question Time.

I certainly remember one or two other faces presenting the Nine from time to time - for instance, John Humphrys and Nicholas Witchell. Presumably because neither Buerk nor Sissons were available. I think some time around 1994, Sissons and Lewis swapped with each other - Sissons went to the Nine and Lewis to the Six.

In terms of the Nine presenter also presenting the weekend late bulletins, it may have extended slightly into the china red and cream era. I just can't remember exactly when it stopped. Certainly it wasn't happening by the time the Ten launched because I'm sure I remember a big fuss about how the Ten branding was being used for the Sunday late bulletin. In fact, for a while, the Sunday Ten presenter used to link directly into Panorama, too.

Humphrys and Witchell stood in on the rare occasions when Buerk and Sissons were unavailable, but I don't think this was over an extended period. According to Genome, Martyn Lewis did still present a few editions after the switch over, and I vaguely remembering him presenting the Nine post 97 (I don't have any evidence sadly), but I'm assuming that was because someone called in sick at short notice, and he'd have just presented the Six so he stayed on.

I can remember Peter occasionally standing in right up until the 2003 relaunch, especially on occasions when Huw Edwards was presenting on location.

Did anybody record the BBC tributes? I remember being allowed to stay up past 9 o'clock when I turned 7, and I always enjoyed trying to guess if it would be Peter or Michael presenting the news that night. RIP Peter, always one of thebest newsreaders.

To the best of my knowledge, Peter's last network bulletin was in August 2004 when he stood in one weekend. As a Peter fan, I decided to capture the opening and closing of the bulletin:

I especially like the way he slams the laptop shut at the end, as if to say "we didn't have this junk in my day!" Very Happy

He presented a few weekend bulletins right up until 2009. I can't remember the date, but I distinctively remember one being in the middle of a FA Cup fixture, with Gary Lineker cutting to him at half time.

And Another example is New Years Day 2006.

I've just had a look at Genome and you're right, he presented weekend network bulletins sporadically through until 2008. I had no idea - I must have just missed them at the time. After about 2004, I only remember him on News 24.

One other thing I've just remembered - he also had that "News 24 Sunday" programme during the summer holidays for a while. Wasn't it a replacement for Breakfast with Frost / Sunday AM or something like that?

Yes it was - it ran throughout the summer for a few years when Frost/Marr were on annual leave. It had a similar style - newspaper reviews, analysis, separate news bulletin at the start (!). I remember he suited it quite well. Think it's last stint was 2007, the year before News 24 became the News Channel.
