This is sad news, and I can only echo others' comments rather than add anything useful.

On a presentation related note, can someone date/explain this strange OTS graphic used on the Telegraph's obit article?

I'd date that as 2000, when the 10 launched. It was the style of OTS graphic used by BBC News at that time.

Very sad day. Huw's just been paying tribute to him on the News channel with Simon McCoy.

I think I can speak for everyone on here when I say that when he was in his prime at ITN and on the BBC nationals he was first class and had an authority about him that not many people could match.

RIP.

2 events that I still remember clearly even today are 9/11 and Peter announcing the death of the queen mother, I was probably a bit too young back then to even notice the significance of tie colours!

Or as he wrote himself... “The beginning of the 21st century was an exciting time to read the autocue”

Incredibly sad news - never watched him on TV of course but have seen and heard many great things about him.

A short recap of Peter's career by The Telegraph:

and the announcement of his death on the BBC News Channel at 12:40 this lunchtime (uploaded by TV Newsroom)

as well as a tribute by Huw Edwards on today's Afternoon Live (again by TV Newsroom)

I thought that but it's too 'orange' - it looks like it should belong on breakfast.

So is Peter and the rest of the set. It's just the image.

Marc Griffiths auditioned for BGT a few years ago but didn't get past the initial audition stage.
