Aww, I feel sorry for her. She has to serve a minor sentence in gaol*.

thank goodness it wasn't just me who's noticed the irritating widespread use of the american spelling.

the fact it is an american gaol doesn't mean we have to use their spelling. if she had gone to gaol in germany we wouldn't be calling it gefängnis

Absolutely nothing, except the Hilton Hotel brand name, which annoys people. Wink

Good, I hope I never see her nasty face again! (Well at least a 1 month and a 1/2)

For Pete's sake! Why is the top story about a Z-list celebrity being sent to jail for perfectly valid reasons while the G8 summit spouts nonsense that is quite rightly described by Bob Geldof as 'utter b*ll*cks'?

Just out of interest, what were News 24 and Al Jazeera's top stories and did they even mention Ms Hilton? (I wasn't watching News 24 at the time and for some reason Virgin Media doesn't supply Al Jazeera.)

edit : Does anyone think the name 'FOX News' is a bit cruel on foxes? They're far too intelligent to watch that offal. Mercifully there's no urban scavenger called the 'WSVN 7'...

News 24 did have it as the 3rd Top Story. Al Jazeera didn't mention it, and like News 24 had the main top story as the G8 Summit.
I know Al Jazeera briefly mentioned her going to jail (the first time), at the end of the half-hour bulletins. Just the presenter mentioning it over pictures of her arriving at the prison.

Bebe: Wow, that's really her! Paris! Over here!
Wendy: I don't get it. What does she do?
Annie: She's super-rich!
Wendy: ...but what does she do?
Red: She's totally spoiled and savvy.
Wendy: [annoyed] What does she do?!
Man: She's a whore.

Without wanting to go wildly off-topic, 'jail' is not an Americanisation of 'gaol'; the latter has been in use far longer than the USA has been around - indeed, the debate over which is more correct dates back to at least 1668, and almost certainly further.

'Gaol' is descended from the Norman French 'gayhole' (really), whereas 'jail' comes from the Parisian French 'jaiole'. They're merely synonyms, with the earliest recorded use of both emerging at around the same time (1300ish).

'Jail' is the official US spelling, though, whereas both are equally acceptable in British English.

It does my head in, all these people such as Paris Hilton who are famous for, er... for, er... for being famous! Rolling Eyes

There's two types of famous people:

1: " Proper famous people" (e.g. actors/actresses, sportsmen/women, politicians... and many other things)
2: "Celebrities" (e.g. ex-Big Brother contestants, "socialites", etc etc)

The latter should not be allowed any kind of media exposure, as they don't do anything except have a pointless, self-perpetuating existence.

There are several squillion different magazine titles that wouldn't even exist if "celebrities" didn't exist. Good. They're a shameful waste of half-a-rainforest's worth of paper. Can we please just brutually murder all "celebrities"? Twisted Evil
