(after all, it says they want a Natasha Kaplinsky-style presenter).

Everything about this worries me. If they were so sure that a nationwide relaunch would work they wouldn't be 'trying it out' in the middle of the no-audience month. (Trying out a show in August says to me that they basically already know it's doomed - so why bother)

Also, I'm thinking that they're hijacking the old nationwide name at the moment to play on the hearstrings of the nation. Everyone has fond memories of the show. However, I doubt the final show will resemble it at all. I think we're going to end up watching a dangerously tabloid, cliched, dumbed down programme. If you want to see what I reckon they're going to put on - log on to www.idents.tv/blog. From there you can see clips of A Current Affair and Today Tonight - two prime time 'curent affairs' shows presented by Natasha Kaplinsky types. They are awful and are regularly slated by comedy shows down under. They're basically like America's NBC Dateline but produced by someone with learning difficulties!!
This will make the case for a Scottish Six more than anything so, on that ground, bring on Nationwide!

After looking at the comments made on this forum..a Scottish Six will never ever happen. Sadly, smgboi..I think that the news service in Scotland will be starved off more oxygen. I wonder if it will be called Nationwide. I can remember parts of the orginal format..and cannot see it being as good as the current Six o'Clock News? Hey ho

The show will probably broadcast between 630 and 730 so the Six O'Clock News will stay as it is. That's why I believe this new show will take on more of a Today Tonight (Australia) format. It won't have much news as it will follow the news. It'll be full of paedophile hunts, human trafficking investigations, 'our nhs in crisis', cowboy builders and 'exclusive interviews' with pointless people. Think Sky's Lunchtime Live mixed with Tonight with Trevor McDonald, Panorama and Watchdog!

The Pilot has been confirmed today

Quote:
"We also plan to pilot, on BBC ONE (network), a new weekday evening magazine show compiled from the nations and regions of the UK – a 21st-century version of Nationwide to complement our existing core news output."

It will be scheduled at 7.00pm.

If the programme isn't going to be "wrapped" around the national & regional bulletins, then it's simply another current affairs strand in similar vein to the "Special Report" (I think it was called that) which Fiona Bruce used to present.

I can't see it being a success. It's up against the "soap hour" on ITV1, and anyone who wants a helping of more news after their evening meal would turn to Channel 4 anyway at 7pm.

Suspect this is just a schedule filler for the quiet Summer period rather than a "trial".

If this is going out at 7pm, isn't it just going to be very similar to BBC News 24 Tonight? They could even do a simulcast of that on BBC One, thus saving more money!

Adrian Chiles is going to present it according to Broadcast today. Good choice in my opinion!

Sounds like the regionally-driven element has been diluted somewhat, and it's now more a general magazine:

Broadcast posted:
The show will be stripped across weekdays for four weeks in late summer, and will be scheduled for a 6.55pm start to keep viewers tuned to BBC1 following the strong-performing hour of national and local news.

It will feature current affairs programming, but its bosses have also approached the BBC’s in-house factual and learning departments – including natural history, science, documentaries and history – for pitches for segments which can be included.

The programme aims to be a factual offering for the “family viewing” demographic, which BBC1 controller Peter Fincham feels has been well served by drama with programmes such as Doctor Who, and entertainment with shows such as Strictly Dance Fever.
